Why Anakin In Ahsoka Is More Important Than Vader In Obi-Wan

The announcement of Darth Vader in Obi-Wan Kenobi was a bombshell announcement, but the return of Anakin in Ahsoka bears even more potential for a satisfying Star Wars story. Star Wars has been experiencing a bit of a Hayden Christensen renaissance, with Christensen's voice featured in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalkerand his involvement in Obi-Wan Kenobi confirmed in late 2020. It seems Disney has even bigger plans for the Anakin Skywalker actor, however, given the recent confirmation of his appearance in Ahsoka.

While Darth Vader's return in Obi-Wan Kenobi is confirmed, the exact role he will play in the series is unclear. Kathleen Kennedy has teased "the rematch of the century," which implies that Obi-Wan and Vader will duel at some point, and Obi-Wan could help the prequel trilogy by the tasteful employment of flashbacks. While this news is certainly exciting, Anakin/Vader in Ahsoka has every opportunity to be a more essential, and earned, part of the story.

The main reason Anakin in Ahsoka bears so much potential is the charged emotional nature of their relationship - and the fact that it hasn't been seen on-screen. Those who have seen Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels have followed Ahsoka Tano's journey from Anakin's apprentice up to the moment she learns of his transformation into Darth Vader. Ahsoka will have to re-tell this story in some way, though, as many viewers who met Ahsoka in The Mandalorian would have little idea of her history. While Obi-Wan's relationship with Anakin was explored in the Skywalker Saga, Ahsoka has the opportunity to both re-introduce and expand Tano's relationship with her former Master.

Though flashbacks may finally treat audiences to live-action Clone Wars, Anakin is also likely to appear as a Force ghost given Ahsoka's place in the Star Wars timeline. As Ahsoka is stated to take place around the same time as The Mandalorian season 3, Anakin will have died at the hands of Emperor Palpatine only a few years before. Ahsoka may then show Tano's first reunion with her old Master, which would be especially powerful as the last time she saw him, he tried to kill her as Darth Vader. A reformed Anakin Skywalker reflecting on what drove him to become Darth Vader and seeking absolution from his former Padawan would be a gripping moment that could overshadow even Obi-Wan Kenobi's first look at a suited-up Darth Vader.

Hayden Christensen's return in Ahsoka may also connect her to the Skywalker Saga in a big way by bringing Luke Skywalker into the conversation. If Anakin and Ahsoka discuss his fall and redemption, it's highly likely Anakin will bring up his son. This bears potentially massive implications for Star Wars because while Luke appeared in The Mandalorian season 2, there's no indication Ahsoka knows of his existence. While Anakin mentioning his son to Ahsoka would be an interesting touch at the least, at the most it could lead to a meeting between the two surviving Jedi and could establish a link down the road between Ahsoka and Luke's Jedi academy.

Of course, there's always a chance that Anakin's appearance in Ahsoka is a simply cameo - but that would be a major missed opportunity as Ahsoka is majorly tied to the Skywalkers. While Anakin's appearance in Ahsoka may not be as action-heavy as Vader's will be in Obi-Wan, he could easily take the role of a reoccurring character, similar to what Obi-Wan Kenobi was to Luke in the original Star Wars trilogy. More light will ideally be shed on the subject once the first Ahsoka trailer drops.
