Early reviews for Eternals are are notably less positive than the rest of the movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, resulting of one of the franchise's lowest Rotten Tomatoes scores yet, even if it's still rated Fresh. Eternals was always billed as a change of pace for the MCU, with a focus on a team of brand new characters presented by Oscar winner Chloé Zhao, but so far that change also means a break from the MCU's traditionally strong performance on Rotten Tomatoes.
The MCU currently has a perfect record on Rotten Tomatoes, with every single movie landing a "Fresh" rating, and all but two of them getting the even more impressive "Certified Fresh" seal from the review aggregator (including every single movie since Thor: The Dark World). Through the 25 movies before Eternals, the MCU had a total of 9,470 reviews submitted to Rotten Tomatoes 8,098 have been fresh and 1,372 have been rotten, coming out to an 85% average with the actual review scores averaging out to 7.23 out of ten.
Eternals only has 81 reviews so far, so it has a ways to go to reach the MCU's 379 average review count, but the initial score lands at 64% with a 6.0 out of 10 average. This makes it the lowest scoring movie in MCU on the Tomatometer, below Thor: The Dark World at 66% and The Incredible Hulk at 67%. Naturally, being the lowest scoring film in the MCU also puts it well below the average MCU Tomatometer of 85%, and the 6.0 out of 10 is also the MCU's lowest average review score, below the MCU average of 7.22, with the next highest being Thor: The Dark World and The Incredible Hulk, which are tied at 6.2.
Converting the 6.0 out of 10 average review score to a percentage so it can be compared to the Tomatometer reveals Eternals' 64% Rotten Tomatoes score is only four points higher than the 60% average review score. This difference is eight points below the 12 point average difference between the Tomatometer and average review score for every other MCU's movie. This means the lower reviews for Eternals tend to be a result of genuinely less enthusiastic response than most reviewers had for other MCU movies, as opposed to a hot-and-cold polarized response, which is usually indicated by the average review score being higher than the other films, while the Rotten Tomatoes score is lower. The MCU has never had a single movie with an average review score higher than its Tomatometer score, but Eternals' current score is the closest an MCU movie has come to flipping that ratio.
Of course, this is just the first batch of reviews, so the score could change as more reviews come in. Most blockbusters in 2021 have seen scores drop to varying degrees after release, but there's no way of knowing if it'll just drop a few points like Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, or a bunch of points like Black Widow. At this point, if it drops more than 5 more points it'll also become the MCU's first movie with a Rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes.
