The reason behind Sheldon's (Jim Parsons) hatred of engineers like Howard (Simon Helberg) is revealed in the new Young Sheldon season 5 trailer. Sheldon is known for being the textbook definition of a genius in The Big Bang Theory. Fully aware of this, he never misses any chance to impose on his intellectual superiority on others, including his friends, despite them being successful in their own right. Specifically, Sheldon always mocks Howard because he's an engineer and doesn't have a PhD.
In The Big Bang Theory, all of Sheldon's male friends have their doctorates and specialize in the study of physics, making it easy for Sheldon to single out Howard. This is despite him being the only one from the Pasadena gang to be sent to space after creating the Wolowitz Zero-Gravity Waste Disposal System, which was deployed on the International Space Station. Howard also created the telescope used in the same space station, as well as the components for satellites and space probes. Sheldon's digs at Howard can be hurtful at times, and there were instances across The Big Bang Theory in which the pair ended up fighting. Over the years, however, Howard learned to simply scoff at Sheldon's comments to keep the peace in their group.
Now, Howard has made his voice cameo in Young Sheldon season 5, episode 7, "An Introduction to Engineering and a Glob of Hair Gel." The moment serves as a reveal of why Sheldon really hates engineers. Before the episode aired, the show's latest new promo offered an explanation to the young character's aversion to the topic, which seemingly is down to the fact that Sheldon struggled at an engineering class in college. As seen in the new Young Sheldon trailer, Sheldon takes a new engineering class. While he's often thrilled with school work, the clip shows him becoming increasingly frustrated because he can't figure it out. This is the first time in Young Sheldon that the character has actually struggled with academics; something that Missy (Raegan Revord) is clearly enjoying. It will be interesting to see what actually comes out of this unique plot line. Viewers might hope that Sheldon learns a life lesson or two during this time, although it's already been shown that he ultimately develops a life-long hatred of engineering, which he takes out on his friend in The Big Bang Theory.
The voice over in Young Sheldon season 5, episode 7 also features Howard as Sheldon prepares to talk about his experience in college. While The Big Bang Theory ended in 2019, the series is still extremely popular, so hearing the characters bicker in the spin-off is definitely a treat for fans. What's interesting here is that Sheldon seemingly invited Howard to take part in this narration, despite knowing that it would reveal his one academic failure. It's highly likely that Sheldon bent the truth later in life, making it seem like he actually aced the engineering course, only to admit now that it was difficult for him. Whatever the case may be, this fun Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon crossover gives new insight into the grown-up Sheldon, and will surely be a delight for fans of both shows.
