Warning! Spoilers for I Am Batman #4
In an upcoming comic, the next Batman AKA Jace Fox is dealing with the fallout from Fear State. Following the Scarecrow’s rampage alongside the tyrannical Magistrate, the event officially concludes with I Am Batman.
As Tim “Jace” Fox takes on the mantle of the Dark Knight, he is encountering new villains of his own and growing into the role as Gotham’s newest guardian. Before he definitively goes off on his way as the next Batman, there is still a lot to wrap up regarding the events of Fear State. While Bruce Wayne travels the world in the approaching Abyss story arc to get to the bottom of a mystery, Gotham depends on Jace.
In a preview released by DC Comics, the synopsis and cover for I Am Batman #4 has teased Jace Fox’s future as the Dark Knight. The upcoming issue will follow Jace while a hit team from the Magistrate coming after him. I Am Batman #4 will be written by John Ridley with art by Segovia and Christian Duce, with colors by Rex Lokus, and letters by Troy Peteri. As shown in the announcement, Stephen Segovia’s cover depicts a shadowy Batman standing in the rain. The issue is set to have a main cover by Gerardo Zaffino, a card stock variant by Rafael Sarmento, and another variant by Max Dunbar on their way. I Am Batman #4 will be available in digital and print on Tuesday, December 14.
The upcoming issue hints that Jace Fox’s time as Batman is only beginning, which is convenient timing as Bruce is out of town. His tenure at the vigilante began in Future State: The Next Batman and continued with The Next Batman: Second Son, providing new readers plenty of material to become familiar with Gotham’s latest protector. Many members of the bat family have put on the cowl over the years, with Dick Grayson AKA Nightwing most notably growing into the role during Batman: Battle for the Cowl. It was only a matter of time until the status quo reverted and Bruce Wayne returned, but things are slightly different at this point in the DC Universe. Since Bruce hasn’t stepped down from his war on crime, and Jace is simply becoming an additional Batman, he doesn’t have the same pressure that Grayson had.
When Jace stepped up as the next Batman in the midst of the Magistrate’s reign, he didn’t have much choice. Gotham City hadn’t been in such desperate shape before, and now he has to clean up what’s left of the tyranny’s mess. Based on the cover, it seems that the son of Lucius Fox is starting to take on Batman’s frustrated condition, realizing that Fear State wasn’t a clear end to the city’s many problems.
