For the upcoming 60th anniversary of Doctor Who, the comics will be able to celebrate in a way that the series will not. The Ninth Doctor didn’t appear in the 50th anniversary special, and it seems like Christopher Eccleston won’t be reprising the role for the next one. However, the Ninth Doctor and various Doctors could team up in the comics.
It’s been known for a while that Eccleston left the series on bad terms following his portrayal of the Doctor. When David Tennant was announced to return as the Tenth Doctor for the 50th anniversary, fans were left wondering if they would ever see the Ninth Doctor back in live action again. Although Eccleston has recently reprised the role in audio dramas for Big Finish, he revealed during a panel at Dragon Con that he will not come back to the show. As he explained that his relationship with show runner Russell T. Davies fell apart throughout filming the first season, he firmly stated he wouldn’t return for the 60th anniversary, which Davies is set to helm.
However, this has provided Doctor Who comics the opportunity to commemorate the 60th and outperform the actual series with a crossover between all the Doctors, including the Ninth. Titans’ comics have featured several Doctors teaming up with each other over the years, so this isn’t new territory for expanded media. Similar to the stories released by Big Finish, the ongoing Doctor Who title offers an alternate version of the franchise, with a much larger scale than the show at times. Although various incarnations of the Doctor can’t cross paths due to real world circumstances, comics can step up to the 60th anniversary with an epic tale of their own.
Although various incarnations of the Doctor can’t cross paths due to real world circumstances, comics can step up to the 60th anniversary with an epic tale of their own. Since Christopher Eccleston only portrayed the Doctor in live action for one season, it has left fans wanting more. While the hopes of fans can’t be satisfied by the official 60th anniversary special in the near future, comics are able to intertwine with over cross-media projects.
In another example of what the show is not permitted to do, Doctor Who’s audio dramas, novels, and comics, among other things, have the ability to tie together. Since BBC is in charge of the show itself, and operates as a public service broadcaster, they have some restraints in this department. Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor is unlikely to be featured in Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary special, comics writers and artists have a chance to fulfill readers’ wishes.
