The action designers behind Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings react to one of the film's fight scenes involving Wenwu and reveal that the planning involved Captain America & Stan Lee toys. Released in September, Shang-Chi quickly became one of the highest-grossing films of the year, breaking several box office records and aiding in establishing the early success of the MCU's Phase Four. In the first on-screen adaptation of the comic, Simu Liu stars as Shang-Chi, and the film spends a significant amount of time observing his character's past. In a new video from Corridor Crew, the action designers involved in Shang-Chi explain what exactly went into planning the pivotal father-son showdown near the film's finale. Chris Cowan and Yung Lee talk about the benefits of working with so many filmmakers and how it makes the collaboration process easier. They also express that it is not always about a big Hollywood treatment, stating that this scene in particular was planned using Stan Lee and Captain America action figures. "He shot the whole scene with a Stan Lee action figure and Captain America and literally that was handed to him by Marvel. That goes to show, honestly, like even on the big budget movies, going low budget is sometimes super helpful."
Shang-Chi did incorporate a lot of special effects in its battles, but those too required preparations. Many of the actual stunts in the project were performed and choreographed by real professionals. The fight between Shang-Chi and Wenwu is important to the film, so getting it nailed down beforehand was necessary. Stunt visualizations do not always look like the final product seen in movies, but the effort put into this sequence and others like it, shows in Shang-Chi, and audiences were receptive to that.
Fans and critics have lauded the action in Marvel's Shang-Chi, with many noting that as one of the features that helps distinguish it from previous MCU films.
