Hailee Steinfeld Celebrates Hawkeye Premiere With 'How It Started' Meme

Hailee Steinfeld celebrates the premiere of Hawkeye with a "How it started vs How it's going" meme post. The American actor plays Kate Bishop in the Disney+ Marvel Cinematic Universe show, which is the first to feature Jeremy Renner's titular character in a leading role. Episodes 1 & 2 of the six-part miniseries premiere on the streaming service today, November 24, with the remaining four dropping on successive Wednesdays.

Since being nominated for an Oscar for her True Grit role at 13 years old, Steinfeld has been one of Hollywood's most exciting young performers, and Marvel fans are hotly anticipating her inclusion in the sprawling superhero franchise. That she joins as a fan-favorite comics character, who happens to take over the mantle of Hawkeye from Clint Barton, is an added bonus, with many hoping she will develop into a key player in the years to come. Additionally, while the expert archer has been the butt of many an Avengers joke, audiences are excited to see Renner's character explored in greater depth, much in the way that Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoff was in this year's Black Widow film.

With Hawkeye now finally approaching its release on Disney+, Steinfeld takes to Instagram to point out just how much has changed for her during this process. Replicating the popular meme format, she shares an image of her shooting the series in New York City's famous Times Square, which is among the most filmed locations in the world. Steinfeld then contrasts it with a video of the same spot filmed from inside a car, where she spotted a Hawkeye ad playing on one of the site's massive video screens. While promotional material for the series has revealed limited plot details, they have focused on setting up Kate's personality and her dynamic with Clint, which suggest Hawkeye will make good use of Steinfeld's comedic talent. Officially positioned as a raw but talented archer that the former-Avenger takes under his wing, Kate is also clearly a Hawkeye superfan in a world that mostly idolizes his teammates, with multiple clips showing her geeking out over her new mentor. The dissonance between her bubbly enthusiasm and his world-weary reluctance should prove a key throughline for the series that promises to be one of the MCU's more street-level projects.

Steinfeld's post offers a hint at what the experience of the Marvel whirlwind might be like for its new stars, and with early Hawkeye reviews mostly positive, that media storm should only grow in intensity from here. While the show is certainly designed to celebrate Renner's hero on what seems to be his way out, it's also very invested in introducing a new character in Kate Bishop who could play a major role in the MCU's future, perhaps moreso than any of the Disney+ series so far. Fans shouldn't be too surprised, then, if the future bearer of the titular alter-ego ends up outshining the incumbent.
