Red Notice Beats Bird Box As Netflix's Most-Watched Movie Ever

The action-comedy Red Notice has become the number 1 film in the history of Netflix in just two weeks. Red Notice teams A-list superstars Ryan Reynolds, The Rock, and Gal Gadot in a globetrotting adventure that sees an FBI profiler hiring the world's second most-wanted art thief to help him take down the world's most-wanted art thief. The film was directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, who previously teamed with The Rock on Central Intelligence and SkyscraperRed Notice also stars Chris Diamantopoulos and Ritu Arya.

Red Notice debuted on the streaming platform on November 12 following a one-week limited run in theaters, which does qualify the film for an Oscar nomination, however unlikely that prospect may be. Its theatrical engagement fared incredibly poorly. Faced with competition from Marvel's Eternals, it netted a box office total that Netflix has declined to announce, but has been estimated to be under $1 million. However, once the film debuted on streaming it hit none of the same roadblocks and instantly rose to #1 on the Netflix charts on its first day.

On his Instagram, The Rock posted a clip from the film showing him and Ryan Reynolds trading barbs in the cafeteria of a Russian prison. The post includes a caption that announces that Red Notice is now "THE BIGGEST MOVIE IN THE HISTORY OF NETFLIX!!!" In just two weeks, not only has it topped the weekly charts, it has now risen to be Netflix's #1 feature film of all time. Check out the post below:

Now that Red Notice has claimed the throne, it has knocked the post-apocalyptic thriller Bird Box down to the #2 position. Bird Box has held the top slot ever since its banner premiere week, gobbling up viewership between Christmas and New Year's in 2018 thanks to its word-of-mouth success. Bird Box had an iron grip over the rankings, to the point that it remains the oldest film on the list, which also includes ExtractionThe IrishmanThe Kissing Booth 26 UndergroundSpenser ConfidentialEnola HolmesArmy of the Dead, and The Old Guard.

Red Notice is the most expensive film Netflix has ever released, so this news certainly proves that it's provided them as much of a return on investment as possible. It can be incredibly difficult to predict what projects will blow up on the platform, which is why Bird Box hadn't budged for three years. However, the combination of Rock, Gadot, and Reynolds was clearly too intoxicating for the viewing public to ignore.
