Eternals star Barry Keoghan has played down the rumors that he could play a part in Dune: Part Two. Keoghan plays Druig, one of the immortal super-beings protecting the Earth in Marvel’s Phase 4 film. Eternals follows ancient immortal heroes that have watched over humanity for 7,000 years, as they are forced to take action to fight the threat of the evil Deviants. The 26th MCU film is being directed by Chloé Zhao, the Oscar-winning director behind Best Picture Nomadland. The project features an all-star cast, including Game Of Thrones alums Richard Madden and Kit Harrington, Crazy Rich Asians’ Gemma Chan and superstar actresses Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek.
The 29-year-old Keoghan is another member of the stacked cast of superheroes. His character Druig is an isolated member of the team who can control people’s minds. The Irish-born actor first wowed audiences in Yorgos Lanthimos’ 2017 horror-drama Killing Of A Sacred Deer, where he tormented Colin Farrell with an eerie, psychotic emptiness. Keoghan is a rising star in Hollywood, and has since had small roles in Dunkirk and Chernobyl, as well as a so-far unnamed supporting part in 2022’s The Batman. The actor is certainly a promising talent, and thus follows heavy casting rumors.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Keoghan addressed rumors linking him to the upcoming Dune sequel. The actor was also asked about posting some cryptic emojis online that added fuel to the speculation. Supposedly surprised by the theories, he asked "Is that what people are saying?" before adding “take it whatever way you want.” When asked if he would be up for playing the part of Feyd in the recently-greenlit Dune sequel, the actor keenly responded “definitely” before confirming he’s a “massive fan” of director Denis Villeneuve and star Timothée Chalamet.
Last week, following a $41 million domestic opening weekend for Dune, Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures officially announced the sequel, Dune: Part Two. Set to release on October 20, 2023, the film was always planned to finish the story of Frank Herbert's original novel. However, its production was never guaranteed, and rested largely on the reception of the anticipated first chapter in Dune. Attention now turns to the potential cast members who could be added to the sequel, with several of the book’s characters not appearing in Villeneuve's first half.
Fans are keen to see Keoghan join the sci-fi fantasy world, and many believe he could play Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen. Feyd is the nephew of the cruel Baron Harkonnen, played to menacing perfection by Stellan Skarsgård in the newly-released film. The Na-Baron, heir to his uncle’s armies, is just as cruel as his kinship. Sting originally played the part in David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation, but many fans see Keoghan as the perfect candidate for the 2023 sequel. The actor’s repertoire certainly prepares him for the menacing, cold world of the Harkonnens and it’s easy to imagine him nailing the character’s twisted, sinister persona. For now, new casting for Dune 2 remains unknown, as the project is yet to begin production. Keoghan is clearly open to the idea, and audiences can get a look at how he handles franchise films in Eternals.
