Doctor Who Season 13 Video Dives Deep Into New Companion Dan Lewis

The official Doctor Who Twitter account has shared a video that has explored companion Dan Lewis. Dan, a newcomer to the Doctor Who universe, is played by comedian and actor John Bishop. Dan made his first full appearance in Doctor Who: Flux, episode 1, "The Halloween Apocalypse."

In episode 1, the museum-loving, compassionate Liverpudlian plumber is swept up into the Doctor's intergalactic adventures when he is seemingly kidnapped by dog-like alien warrior Karvanista (Craige Els). Rescued by The Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) and Yaz (Mandip Gill), Dan is taken aboard the TARDIS as the Doctor faces the universal collapse caused by the oncoming Flux cataclysm. With Dan about to face the newly redesigned Sontarans, Weeping Angels, and the mysterious skeletal Swarm, the cast and crew have provided more insight into the show's newest time traveler.

Posted on the official Doctor Who Twitter account, the video features, Bishop, Whittaker, Gill, and episode director Jamie Stone sitting down and breaking down the "down to earth" character of Dan Lewis. The cast discussed how Dan is suddenly swept up into the Doctor's adventures, and how he reacts to the fantastical things he will see. Bishop also talked about meeting showrunner Chris Chibnall and Dan's connection to his hometown of Liverpool, and how the show would reflect the storyline involving the English city. The cast finally discussed Dan's role in the TARDIS team's dynamic, with the plumber disrupting the dynamic Yaz and The Doctor had built off-screen, while providing the audience with a surrogate. Bishop concluded the video by discussing The Doctor and how the show explores her "bond with humanity." Check out the full video below.

Introduced in a teaser following the 2021 Doctor Who New Years Day special, "Revolution of the Daleks," Dan was introduced with few details. Mystery continued to shroud the character until Doctor Who: Flux was heavily promoted closer to its October release. Bishop briefly found himself in hot water with the BBC after revealing details during a talk in Liverpool that the broadcaster considered a spoiler, which the comedian joked about in later interviews. Audiences first got a better glimpse at Dan in trailer for Doctor Who: Flux, as well as a short clip of the character at home released before season 13 began.

With his clear, earnest compassion and Bishop's lovable performance, Dan is sure to become a fan favorite. Viewers have already begun to speculate about the character's possible confrontation with the Sontaran's due to promotional images featuring a pan-wielding Dan. Many have compared it to former companion Donna Noble's (Catherine Tate) confrontation in the series, while praising the character's humanity, even in his circumstances. What's more, with both companions Bishop and Gill recently teasing a potential future beyond Chibnall and Whittaker's exit, fans of Doctor Who may have more adventures with Dan yet.
