Players now have the opportunity to experience Tamriel on current-gen consoles with the release of Skyrim: Anniversary Edition, but they shouldn't ignore The Elder Scrolls Online either. While many players have taken tens or even hundreds of hours to explore everything that Skyrim has to offer, not all of them will have played Elder Scrolls Online. ESO launched in 2014 and has received multiple content add-ons in the years since, providing a comprehensive Elder Scrolls package that could entice Skyrim's players.
Considering that Skyrim was such a massive success, winning several awards and near-unanimous praise from both reviewers and players, the next game is eagerly awaited. However, with Elder Scrolls 6's release still far away, some fans have been diving back into previous Elder Scrolls titles. However, even a game as massive as Skyrim can get too familiar, and players looking for new Elder Scrolls content may find ESO to be an enticing prospect.
Elder Scrolls Online is newer than Skyrim by a few years, but it has a few advantages in its own right. While the game has yet to receive the same amount of attention as Skyrim, it has more than its fair share of fun to offer. It has a surprisingly engaging main plot for an MMO, with some interesting references to the rest of the series. In addition, while Skyrim has not had new DLC in years, Elder Scrolls Online is still receiving expansions, adding new content and fixing previously reported glitches. With the game still growing, there will be more quests to embark on and experiences to have for quite some time. Likely the most intimidating factor would be the financial cost of a new game, which is an understandable concern especially with MMOs having a reputation for being expensive hobbies.
There is one significant intangible in play when it comes to which game to choose, and that is the player themselves. For some, the allure of jumping into a new experience is intoxicating and exciting. For others, there is a comfort in returning to familiar experiences. The former will find it easier to jump into ESO, while the latter may be more likely to stay with Skyrim, especially with Anniversary Edition adding new modes and content. It ultimately comes down to personal preference.
In the end, the decision on whether or not to move onto Elder Scrolls Online lies solely in the hands of the player. Some may be content with the amount of content that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has to offer, while others may now be looking for a new experience. Either way, Elder Scrolls fans have multiple options to keep them occupied until the sixth main game releases.
