As the Star Wars galaxy continues to expand, Qi’ra could become the new Mara Jade. With the upcoming miniseries Crimson Reign which promises to expand on Crimson Dawn’s intimidating leader, Qi’ra is likely to bear some resemblance to the expanded universe’s most beloved hero.
When Disney acquired Lucasfilm, the Star Wars expanded universe comprised of books, video games, and comics were disregarded and no longer considered canon. Since then, Marvel’s Star Wars titles have rewritten major elements of the galaxy. Although some characters like Grand Admiral Thrawn have returned, storylines have been remixed, with premises retrofitted for new continuity. Similarly, Solo: A Star Wars Story reimagined the origin story of Han Solo, which was first depicted in previous canon’s novelized Han Solo Trilogy written by A. C. Crispin. Among the many characters who haven’t made their way into current canon is Mara Jade, the Jedi love interest of Luke Skywalker.
As Lady Qi’ra is finally expanded upon in comics, Crimson Reign has the potential to turn her into a new continuity version of Mara Jade. In Solo, she became the righthand woman of the crime syndicate’s leader, Maul. Although their partnership has not been explored, it calls back to the dark past of Mara Jade, who was once subservient to the Emperor. Tasked with killing Luke Skywalker at the same time of the miniseries, between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Mara eventually fell in love with him and joined the New Jedi Order. Since the future of Qi’ra remains unknown, she could end up taking a similar place to Mara Jade. In a cover for Crimson Reign illustrated by Leinil Francis Yu, Qi’ra is taking center stage, signaling the miniseries’ importance for her character.

Positioned beneath Darth Vader and Darth Sidious on the cover, Qi’ra is depicted ready to fight the Empire. Despite never being subservient to the Empire like Mara Jade once was, she is still motivated to fight the imperial forces. Although a crime syndicate might not see eye to eye with the Rebel Alliance, they are united by their common enemy. Previously facing Darth Vader in hand-to-hand combat, Qi’ra proved her ability to fight, something she likely learned from the ex-Sith, Maul. Similarly, Mara Jade first learned her fighting style from Darth Sidious, the Sith who had trained Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace. At the moment, it’s unclear if Qi’ra has Force sensitivity, but if she does, it would qualify her to consider the path of the Jedi.
No longer romantically involved with Han Solo, Qi’ra could go onto have a relationship with Luke. In current canon, Luke hasn’t had any major romantic interests, but if he were to be with Qi’ra, it would add new a new angle to The Last Jedi. Some fans had theorized that the death of Mara Jade at the hands of Kylo Ren led to Luke’s abandonment of the Jedi Order, as such a loss would have devastated him. Now, Qi’ra could fill that position, finding new relevance in the Disney era that ties together Solo: A Star Wars Story, ongoing comics, and the sequel trilogy.
