Before she makes her first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Echo is dealing with trying to control the most incredible powers a hero can have in the comics. In Phoenix Song: Echo #1, Echo continues to learn how to adjust to having the powers of the Phoenix Force. Unfortunately for the Avenger, keeping the entity in check is pretty much impossible.
Echo originally debuted in Daredevil #9 and was created by David Mack and Joe Quesada. Introduced as the adopted daughter of the Kingpin, Maya Lopez eventually learned that Wilson Fisk murdered her father, which led her to take a more heroic turn. Echo has photographic reflexes, meaning she can copy the fighting style of her opponents. The hero will be played by Alaqua Cox and make her debut in the MCU in the upcoming Hawkeye series and is set to star in her own spin-off show. In the current Avengers run, Echo was declared the winner of the Phoenix Tournament - despite losing against Namor the Sub-Mariner - as she gained the amazing powers of the cosmic entity. In receiving the powers, Echo became one of Marvel's most powerful heroes in an instant. However, adjusting to the Phoenix Force is no easy task.
In a brand new preview of Phoenix Song: Echo #1 by Rebecca Roanhorse, Carlos Lopez, Luca Maresca, and VC's Ariana Maher, Echo uses her new powers to stop a robbery in Hell's Kitchen. The hero makes a fiery entrance as robbers shoot at her, but Echo melts the bullets before they can hit her. One of the robbers tries to shoot her from behind, but Echo engulfs him in flames.
After noticing the robbers have disappeared, the Phoenix Force continues to take over. She calls them cowards and yells out that she's the Phoenix and that she can't be run from, as she will "kill you all." In the process, Echo lights the entire jewelry store ablaze. As she loses control, a voice calls out for her help.
Containing the Phoenix Force is a near-impossible task, as the cosmic entity has consumed even Marvel's most powerful heroes. In this case, it appears Echo is struggling even to gain any control of it, which inadvertedly led her to torch the jewelry store and seemingly put an innocent life in danger. Echo will need to learn to keep her powers under control somehow; otherwise, the Avengers might need to be called in to stop her before she completely goes off the rails. Phoenix Song: Echo #1 is in comic book stores on Wednesday.
