Zack Snyder has shared the story of the first time Henry Cavill put on the Superman suit in preparation for Man of Steel. After nearly playing the last son of Krypton in J.J. Abrams' canceled Superman: Flyby in the early 2000s, and then losing the role to Brandon Routh for 2006's Superman Returns, Cavill finally got the chance to don the red cape and blue spandex on screen in the Snyder-directed Man of Steel in 2013. Since then, Cavill's iteration of Superman has returned in 2016's Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and the Justice League film in 2017. Cavill also sported the iconic black Superman suit in Zack Snyder's Justice League, which hit HBO Max earlier this year.
Despite appearing in multiple projects, Cavill's Superman never really seemed to connect with mainstream audiences. As a result, the character has largely disappeared from DC films over the last few years, with his one appearance in 2019's Shazam! only showing him from the neck down, to hide the fact that it wasn't Cavill on set. Reports have been circulating since 2018 that Cavill and Warner Bros. have parted ways over the character, yet many fans are still eager to see him make a return. Even Cavill insists that "the cape is still in the closet," teasing his Superman's possible future in the DCEU. Snyder is another fan hoping for a comeback for Cavill's Superman, and now he's shared the story of seeing the actor in costume for the first time.
In a recent conversation with THR, Snyder discussed the feeling of awe he had when he first saw Cavill in the Superman suit. It was during the development of Man of Steel in 2010, and Cavill had been brought in for a screen test. The actor was given one of Christopher Reeve's original suits from the 1980s to try on and, despite the aged spandex, Snyder says he still looked spectacular. Read the director's full quote below:
“When you see the suit on the ground, it’s kind of shriveled up, it’s just spandex, it looks like, ‘Oh God, that’s not going to be cool. Henry put it on in this trailer. And there’s a version of this where he comes out and is like, ‘I’m Superman!’ and you’re like, ‘OK, it’s Halloween.’ But Henry came out and even the crusty grips we hired for the test got quiet. Everybody was heart-attack serious. He had just the right energy. We were like, “Oh, he’s Superman. That’s what Superman looks like.’"
Cavill has also previously commented on his experience in that moment, saying that while he felt he was "too fat to be wearing this suit right now," there was "a sense of excitement, achievement and nervousness” around putting on the famous costume. Hearing the story of Cavill wearing the Superman suit for the first time is bittersweet, as there may never be a point at which fans see him on screen as the character again. Warner Bros. seems to be moving on to new versions of the character, with news coming out earlier this year that the studio is developing several projects that will bring a Black Superman to screen for the first time.
Cavill is also excited for these new takes on the character, recently staying his views that "Superman's far more than skin color." The Man of Steel actor was quick to add, however, that he would still like to return to the role, saying that multiple versions of Superman could exist in film in the same way that multiple Jokers have over the last couple of years. While there are no concrete plans for Cavill's Superman to return to the screen any time soon, stories like Snyder's prove that the actor was, for his time in the suit, a perfect iteration of the iconic DC hero.
