Warning: SPOILERS for Squid Game.
The Front Man is one of the most imposing and mysterious figures in Squid Game, which helps explain an interesting theory as to why he wears black. The Korean drama has been an enormous hit for Netflix, growing to become its most-watched show ever. Squid Game not only draws viewers in with its creepy concept, but also keeps them watching with its plethora of mysterious elements.
Foremost among these mysteries is the identity of Squid Game's Front Man, who runs the shady organization on behalf of the host. Throughout the series, the Front Man appears distinct from the rest of the game's workers because of his special mask and black suit, as opposed to the red outfits of the regular henchmen. He not only commands the current game with its players and workers, but is also revealed to be Jun-ho's missing brother, In-ho, a previous victor. Squid Game season 1 never fully explains how In-ho went from winning the Squid Game to being its Front Man, a question that could get answered in a potential season 2.
Theories abound as to what In-ho's identity as Front Man means for Squid Game season 2, but one Reddit theory, in particular, focuses on the Front Man persona more generally, and why this figure wears black throughout the show. The theory revolves around a CMY color theory (cyan, magenta, and yellow) in which the Front Man exists at the center, black. In summary, the Front Man occupies the central spot on the color wheel because he controls people (cyan), systems (magenta), and money (yellow).
These are the component colors of the wheel, and different combinations are reflected in the colors that various characters wear. For example, when people participate in the game to pursue money, this combination of cyan and yellow yields green, the color that the players wear. The Front Man controls the participants throughout Squid Game due to his role in operating the deadly contest, and he's also at the top of Squid Game's masked worker hierarchy. He could be said to be in charge of the money as well, since he seems to hold a lot of power in determining how the games will end. This is revealed in episode 7 when he uses a control panel to manipulate the conditions of the bridge game to make it more difficult. Thus, because he controls the cyan, magenta, and yellow components of Squid Game, the Front Man must wear black because it is the combination of all these colors.
This theory starts to fall apart in the last two episodes of Squid Game, however. If black should be worn by characters who have everything, this fails to explain why Sae-byeok, Sang-woo, and Gi-hun are all given black tuxedos to wear for the last game. At this point, with most of their friends dead, very little power over their fate, and none of the Squid Game's 45.6 billion won yet, the three actually lack all the components. The tuxedos do include a white shirt, however, which could allude to this lack.
It's also not quite true that the Front Man controls the people, systems, and money in Squid Game. As revealed in episode 9, that distinction actually belongs to Oh Il-nam, the game's creator. The Front Man, as it turns out, has no people, having abandoned his family and possibly killed his brother, is merely part of a system run by somebody else, and while he must have money from winning the game before, he's never seen making use of it. This theory as to why the Front Man wears black in Squid Game is interesting to consider, but in the end, the character may simply wear black because it helps him look intimidating.
