Battlefield 2042 has tried to keep its near future setting rather plausible, and has now canonized NFL quarterback Tom Brady in its game world. 2042 recently released into early access, and will fully launch on November 19, and its marketing campaign has ramped up to grab as many customers as possible. This promotional period includes a cameo appearance from Brady in a new Battlefield 2042 trailer.
Tom Brady is currently the starting quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the reigning Super Bowl champions. Battlefield 2042's "What A Time To Be Alive" trailer doesn't turn him into one of the game's Specialists, but has him exactly where he might be expected - the reigning MVP of the National Football League. Brady was drafted by the New England Patriots in 2000 and has become widely known for his longevity, currently playing in his 22nd season at the age of 44. Brady's retirement has been speculated about for years now, and his cameo in the 2042 trailer is nothing more than a humorous nod at his long career.
The trailer also predicts that esports will continue to rise in popularity, with Battlefield 2042 Specialists riding on the roof of a tuk-tuk as it drives by YouTube Gaming Arena. This seems a bit more plausible than Brady playing football professionally at 65 years old, but who's to say? He long ago cemented his place as one of the greatest to play the sport, and has continued to exceed expectations on the field. Just last season, Brady was awarded the Super Bowl MVP alongside his seventh championship ring, and has shown little evidence of slowing down.
Tom Brady has already won a Super Bowl in three different decades, six with the Patriots and one with the Bucs, but playing until 2042 would give him the chance to win one in five separate decades. He's already thrown an NFL record 608 touchdown passes as of the time of writing, according to Pro Football Reference, and taking his average number of TDs per year of roughly 30 (excluding the year he was a back up to Drew Bledsoe in 2000, and the season he missed with an ACL tear in 2008), he could be approaching 1,250 TD passes by the year 2042. If he managed to stay on Super Bowl-contending teams over the course of the 21 years from 2021 to 2042, he could also double his current NFL record of seven Super Bowl victories.
The 44 year old quarterback already plays with other NFL players who were toddlers when he was drafted in 2000, and by 2042 could conceivably be competing against those players' children. It's near impossible that Tom Brady will play professional football until he's 65, but many didn't believe he'd make it in the league to 44, either. He's looking rather good with the white hair and beard he was given in the Battlefield 2042 trailer as well. If hovercrafts can defy gravity in 2042, what's stopping a quarterback from playing until he's retirement age?
