The Real Meaning Behind Psych 3's Suits Reference | Screen Rant

Among the many shows and movies referenced in Peacock’s Psych 3: This Is Gus was Suits, the popular legal drama that ran for nine seasons and ended in 2019. Like Psych, Suits was a USA Network TV series. Both Suits and USA’s decision to cancel Psych were the subjects of jokes in the new movie.

A year after the release of Psych 2: Lassie Come Home, Shawn (James Roday Rodriguez) and Gus (Dulé Hill) teamed up once more for Psych 3: This Is Gus. The third Psych reunion movie – and the second to release exclusively on NBC’s Peacock streaming service – followed the trend of the show and the last two movies by filling the story with a long list of pop culture references. This time, Psych took shots at its original network and the popularity of the streaming platform that’s hosting it, with both Shawn and Gus claiming not to have heard of Peacock. When USA Network was brought up, Shawn noted that he hadn’t watched it since 2014 (when Psych was canceled). This was followed by a couple of references to Suits.

Similar to the exchange about USA, what Shawn and Gus said about Suits had a special meaning behind it. Gus specifically mentioned that he watched the “last couple seasons of Suits” because Dulé Hill was on the show during this time. After serving as a recurring character in season 7, Hill was a series regular for Suits' last two seasons. This ties in with Shaun’s comment in their next scene about Suits actress Meghan Markle, who married Prince Harry in May 2018. When Shaun asked Gus if Markle invited the entire cast of Suits to the Royal Wedding, Gus said, “Nope. She did not”. This was a joke about the fact that Hill wasn’t on the guest list.

Some of her Suits co-stars, such as Patrick J. Adams, Rick Hoffman, and Gina Torres did attend the Royal Wedding, but not every major cast member was present. Most of the cast members to receive Royal Wedding invitations were actors who had worked with Markle for years on the show. Hill, on the other hand, didn’t join the series until Markle’s final season on Suits.

Psych 3: This Is Gus making a joke about Dulé Hill not being at Meghan Markle’s wedding is certainly not the first time that Psych has had fun dropping nods to the actors’ work outside the show. Psych: 2: Lassie Come Home plugged Rodriguez’ Million Little Things show on ABC. Another example of this is the season 7 episode that referenced Dulé Hill’s West Wing character in a conversation between Shawn and Gus. Through the lines about Suits and the Royal Wedding, Psych 3: This Is Gus found a way to continue this running gag.
