A new Vought News Network video put together for The Boys season 3 offers fans their first glimpse at the 'Supe' known as Groundhawk. Developed by Supernatural creator Eric Kripke for Amazon, The Boys television series adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's comic series of the same name has garnered a legion of fans and much critical acclaim since its debut in 2019. Taking a no-holds-barred approach to its biting satire of well-known superhero tropes, the first two seasons of The Boys have consistently proven that no one, or nothing, is sacred.
Set in a fictional universe where the world’s greatest superheroes are corrupt, corporate puppets blinded by their own arrogance and driven by their own selfishness, the series features characters who are direct parodies of many beloved comic book heroes like The Flash, Superman, Aquaman, and Wonder Woman. The Boys season 3 is also set to see Supernatural’s Jensen Ackles join the cast as Soldier Boy, a character based on Marvel’s Captain America. While filming on the new season officially wrapped in September this year, it is still not known when audiences may expect it to hit Amazon Prime.
In the lead up to The Boys season 3, however, earlier this year the show’s creators have established an “official” Vought International YouTube channel. The channel features music videos, special teases and other show-related content. The most recent video to be released via the channel is another episode of Vought News Network: Seven on 7 with Cameron Coleman, a satirical take on media like Fox News controlled by the show’s fictional corporate conglomerate. In the new video, a news article mentions the Supe Groundhawk and features an image with his character’s hammer-handed silhouette. Insinuating that the alcoholic character has found himself in rehab for “a record-breaking fifth time,” the host wishes him all the best saying, “Here's rooting for you, Groundhawk. Hopefully the fifth time's the charm.” Check out the full video below:
A parody of fan-favorite X-Men character Wolverine, in the original comics, Groundhawk is the leader of the G-Men (an X-Men parody). He wields metal hammers for hands, rather than Wolverine’s trademark adamantium claws. What is unclear, however, is whether or not Groundhawk is actually set to make an appearance in the upcoming The Boys season 3. While previous reports have confirmed the addition of new Supes such as Ackles' Soldier Boy, as well as the TNT Twins, this is the first hint that Groundhawk may enter the series. With a spin-off project already in development focused on the G-Men, this latest tease may even be setting that show up, rather than hinting at the character's appearance in The Boys.
Regardless of which show Groundhawk makes his debut appearance in, it seems that the team behind The Boys will be seeking to cast someone who is “short-statured.” This is a direct reference to Wolverine’s height in the comics, as opposed to Hugh Jackman’s 6’ 3” portrayal of the character. With The Boys already providing comic book fans with a veritable treasure trove of Easter eggs and meta-references to other properties, this latest tease is sure to keep the excitement going until the official season 3 release date is announced. No doubt when that much anticipated announcement does finally arrive, it will be done in the trademark tongue-in-cheek manner that The Boys has come to be known for.
