Star Wars Made Darth Jar Jar Seem Possible by Giving Him a Lightsaber

Warning! Spoilers for Star Wars: Age of Republic Special #1

Although “Darth Jar Jar” was only a fun fan theory to many, Star Wars comics made it seem like a possibility when the Gungan wielded a lightsaber. Interestingly, he managed to use it more competently than readers might have expected.

Ever since a Sith version of Jar Jar Binks appeared in Robot Chicken, the Star Wars fan base hasn’t moved on from the idea. When the mysterious Snoke first appeared in The Force Awakens, audiences revived the notion that The Phantom Menace’s comedic relief could be strong in the dark side. Allegedly pulling the strings throughout the entire saga, Darth Jar Jar would have been revealed to be the most insidious villain in the galaxy. The theory might have only been a running joke for some, but the Gungan’s abilities were revealed in Star Wars: Age of Republic Special #1 during a story titled “501 Plus One,” written by Marc Guggenheim with art by Caspar Wijngaard and colorist Cris Peter.

During the Clone Wars, Jar Jar accompanies clone troopers on a mission at the battle of Mimban, when he gets ahold of a lightsaber and chops down some battle droids. The moment feels extremely out of character for the bumbling Gungan, and only adds fuel to the fire regarding the Darth Jar Jar fan theory. If not for him, Captain Rex might have been ambushed by the galaxy’s weakest droid soldiers. For a second, Jar Jar seems more confident than he has any right to be holding the weapon, when he clumsily lets go of it. Jar Jar almost seems to forget that the clones haven’t seen him in such a light. He even gets mistaken by Rex for General Laan Tik, a known Jedi Knight.

Throughout 501 Plus One, Jar Jar displays readiness for war, proving he’s become more competent since the infamous battle on Naboo. At the time, Jar Jar stumbled and unintentionally took down battle droids with loose bombs. By this point in the Clone Wars, he’s likely learned from the clone troopers, holding his blaster with confidence.

The Jedi Order welcomes all species, including Wookiees as seen in The Clone Wars and the ongoing High Republic. Similarly, the Sith don’t discriminate against any particular alien group, as Darth Plagueis was a Muun. Although it might be jarring to imagine Jar Jar as a Jedi, the Gungan people have always been potential recruits to the Order. Whether Jar Jar would have progressed as a Jedi Knight or fallen to the dark side is a scenario best left to the fans.
