Pokémon: How to Choose Your Starter in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl

The starter choices in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl return from the original generation IV, giving players the difficult decision to choose between Piplup, Turtwig, and Chimchar once more. As veteran Pokémon fans already know, choosing a starter Pokémon can be an agonizing decision to make. Choosing one Pokémon prevents the other two, and their evolutions, from being acquired naturally in-game - forcing players to rely upon trading.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl offers Turtwig, a Grass-type, Chimchar, a Fire-type, and Piplup, a Water-type, for the starter options. Their final evolutions, Torterra, Infernape, and Empoleon, all gain additional types making them Grass and Ground, Fire and Fighting, and Water and Steel-types. While players should ultimately choose whichever Pokémon is their favorite, some may be looking to have a starter that balances out their other favorites on the team, or perhaps for a different reason entirely. Whatever the reason may be, the first starter choice is always an important decision.

Choosing Turtwig is a great decision for Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl because it's strong against many of the Pokémon found in the Sinnoh region. As a Grass-Type, Turtwig is resistant to Ground, Water, Electric, and other Grass-type Pokémon. In its final evolution, Torterra's additional Ground-typing makes it resistant to Rock-types, turns its Grass weakness of Poison-types into neutral damage, and it becomes immune to all Electric-Types. Most of Sinnoh's Pokémon either have Water, Poison, or Ground-typing, putting the advantage in Torterra's hands for many battles. However, as a Grass and Ground-type, Torterra has a 4x weakness to Ice-types, so be sure to add a Fighting, Fire, or Steel-type Pokémon after choosing Turtwig.

Chimchar is by far the best choice in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl for trainers that are looking for more of a challenge. Most of Sinnoh's Pokémon are Water and Ground types, already putting Chimchar at a type disadvantage as soon as it's selected. Furthermore, there are a good amount of Flying and Psychic-type Pokémon in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl as well, providing Infernape with an even greater challenge to overcome as a Fire and Fighting-type Pokémon. However, Infernape's attack stat, speed stat, and movepool all give this Pokémon a solid chance to beat anything it's up against. Additionally, Infernape is perfectly set up to win against any Ice, Steel, Rock, Grass, and Bug-type Pokémon throughout Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl.

Piplup is a great decision for players that are looking to beat Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl as quickly as possible. Being a Water-type already makes Piplup resistant to other Water-type Pokémon. In its final evolution, Empoleon can learn Grass Knot to have the upper hand against many Water-type Pokémon. As a Water and Steel-type, Empoleon is no longer weak against Grass-Types, has an advantage against Fairy-types, immunity to all Poison-type moves, and resistance to every Pokémon move that is a Normal, Dragon, Fairy, Rock, Flying, Ice, Bug, and Psychic-type attack. Empoleon can take on most Gym Leaders by itself, but players should definitely have a Ground-type Pokémon ready to face the final Gym Leader's Electric-Type Pokémon.
