An unbelievably lucky Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl player won a battle after their Luxray survived three fatal attacks. The recently-released remakes of 2006's Pokémon Diamond and Pearl remain true to the original titles, offering classic Pokémon gameplay including turn-based battles, as well as the Friendship mechanic.
While the remakes don't stray far from their roots, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl introduce several quality-of-life changes that were not present in the originals. Hidden Moves no longer have to be taught to specific Pokémon, removing an unnecessary extra step featured in the original games. The effectiveness of each move is also displayed during battle, but only after an enemy Pokémon has been fought at least once, so players no longer need to memorize these statistics. An auto-save feature makes the game much more efficient, and the Grand Underground has been significantly redesigned for a more engaging experience. Despite these changes, Pokémon BDSP is still extremely nostalgic, returning fans to Generation Four's Sinnoh region and reintroducing them to the original games' cast of characters.
In a lucky turn of events, Reddit user fat_falmingo's Luxray managed to survive three knock-out attacks in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (via Game Rant). The monster-collecting franchise features a mechanic called Friendship, which allows players to build a rapport with their Pokémon team. In Pokémon BDSP, a Pokémon with high enough Friendship can ignore otherwise fatal attacks using their unbreakable admiration for their trainer. While having this occur once in a fight is exceedingly rare, fat_falmingo's video shows it happening two times in a row. In the video, an already battle-weary Luxray holds its ground against Steelix with just 1 HP, before surviving two further KO attacks intended to bring it down.

The Friendship mechanic has existed since 1999's Pokémon Gold and Silver, and a trainer's relationship with their pocket monsters can have a number of important effects. Certain Pokémon evolutions, such as Eevee's transformation into either Espeon or Umbreon, can only be achieved once players reach a certain Friendship level with them. the effect of some special moves, such as Return and Frustration, are also affected by a Pokémon's unique Friendship stat. Players can raise a Pokémon's Friendship stat in a number of unique ways, with methods changing with each subsequent generation of the franchise. In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl players can increase their companion's Friendship by capturing them in a Friend Ball or Luxury Ball, giving them consumable gifts, and traveling with them outside their Pokéball.
The Friendship mechanic is one some players don't enjoy, but, as demonstrated by the Redditor, having a strong bond with a player's Pokémon can come in handy when in a tough situation. The ability to survive otherwise-certain knockout blows is extremely useful, and it allowed fat_falmingo's Luxray to defeat an intimidating enemy Steelix. Having this Friendship-based invulnerability occur once in a match is quite rare, but the love between fat_falmingo and their Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl character allowed two fatal blows to be completely ignored.
