Popular indie horror title Phasmophobia is set to introduce summoning circles as part of its upcoming Christmas update. Released as an early access Steam title in 2020 by British indie development studio Kinetic Games, Phasmophobia is a single and multiplayer investigative horror game in which players must complete contracts by identifying ghosts that are haunting specific locations.
Shortly after the game's release, the indie title quickly rocketed to the top of the Steam charts thanks to attention from popular YouTube and Twitch streamers. Phasmophobia's popularity soon earned it the award for Best Debut Game at The Game Awards in 2020, in part due to its gameplay, style, and themes. Since then, the game has continued to receive steady updates from its sole developer, including new ghosts, general bug fixes, and AI improvements. In order to further improve its future updates, the Phasmaphobia dev team finally expanded beyond just one person in June of this year.
As reported by PCGamesN, Phasmophobia’s Christmas 2021 update will introduce a spooky new addition in the form of summoning circles. The feature was spotted on Phasmophobia's official development board on Trello, under the “Christmas [REDACTED] Update,” which is tagged as a minor update currently under development. The list contains four entries for new Cursed Possessions, which includes a "Summoning Circle," "Tortured Voodoo Doll," and two other items which are titled as “[REDACTED].” Along with this, new Ouija Board questions and other unannounced additions are also teased on the page.
Earlier in October, Phasmophobia received its Nightmare update, which added a variety of new content for its fans to enjoy, including a harder difficulty, new map, and several new ghosts to identify. While the developers have not elaborated on the summoning circle feature, teasers of the Cursed Possession in question show that players will be able to force a ghost to appear within the marked area upon activating the circle. It remains unclear if the summoning circle will be an item that appears randomly in maps, or something the player can obtain as gear.
Phasmophobia fans will certainly have even more content to look forward to with its Christmas update, and the potential summoning circle addition will no doubt be a quick way for players to make contact with the ghost, albeit at the cost of their sanity. While the update’s title suggests there won’t be too long of a wait before its release, fans can keep busy by looking for the Phasmaphobia’s Slender Man Easter egg, which can be found in its newly added Campsite map.
Phasmophobia is available on Steam.
