Warning: contains a preview of Teen Titans Academy #7!
The freshman class of the new Teen Titans Academy are supposed to be on vacation in East Nyack, New York, but Teen Titans Academy #7 sees the new students fighting their first battle with a supervillain - without any teachers! The youngest team of Teen Titans have already faced off with several major enemies, such as Red X and the Suicide Squad, but these antiheroes weren't looking to kill, and the new heroes had backup from their teachers and older classmates. Now, Summer, Stitch, Tress, Chupacabra, and Gorilla Gregg are up against one of the Justice League's most powerful supervillains, and one of the students own uncles: Gorilla Grodd!
Teen Titans Academy #6 ended with the group of freshman Teen Titans needing to hide themselves within the growing army of Grodd's hypnotized New Yorkers, as they searched for their missing friend and classmate Gorilla Gregg. Gorilla Grodd, sometime-ruler of Gorilla City, has been a serious villain of Flash and the Justice League for years, and is considered to be one of the most powerful psychics in the known Omniverse. Grodd's apparent grab for control of East Nyack, New York, is the first time that he has been seen since the major role he had in the Death Metal event that reshaped the DC Omniverse.
In a preview for Teen Titans Academy #7, written by Tim Sheridan with art by Rafa Sandoval, the students of the Titans Academy who stayed at the beach begin to worry, as the group of freshman have not yet returned to Beach Pond after going to explore the town of East Nyack. Gregg, one of Roy Harper Titans Academy's newest students, just so happens to be Grodd's nephew, and has seemingly joined his villainous relative. The rest of the freshman group are left to fend for themselves against the "zombified" local population, while also trying to save their friend.
Teen Titans Academy has introduced Gregg as a kind, caring simian who grew up in Seattle, so seeing him acting so clearly evil is shocking to his classmates. Thankfully, the freshly trained new Teen Titans know all about Grodd's history, so are able to quickly assess that Gregg is likely being mentally controlled, with Chupacabra exclaiming, "You still think the Gregg you know exists?! Look at him!" This confrontation with Gorilla Grodd is surely going to test the new Teen Titans individually, and as a team, with both Tress and Black Ice stepping up to the plate to figure out a solution to the Gorilla problem.
With the dark future of the new Teen Titans Academy students seemingly set in stone, the freshman getting to practice their teamwork against someone as powerful as Gorilla Grodd could be crucially important for their later survival. This first solo fight will also be an indicator of how Nightwing, Starfire, Cyborg, and the other original Teen Titans are doing as teachers for the next generation of young heroes. Fans can find out how the young team fare against Gorilla Grodd in Teen Titans Academy #7, available from online and digital retailers today!
