Morbius' Trailers Are Downplaying A Key Part Of The Character

The trailers for the Sony-Marvel movie Morbius are keeping the most somber aspect of the character out of view amid emphasizing his vampire abilities. The third entry in Sony's Spider-Man Universe focused primarily on villains and anti-heroes, Morbius follows scientist Michael Morbius (Jared Leto) on his determined search for a cure for his rare blood disease. Morbius hits upon a swarm of decidedly different vampire bats as the cure he's searched for, but they also have the added side effect of granting him the superhuman abilities of a vampire.

The first trailer for Morbius played up the film's monster movie tone of Morbius becoming a vampire, while the second places a lot of emphasis on Morbius adjusting to his newfound vampiric powers and having fun with them. Both of these obviously fit the tone of a superhero movie with a vampire angle like Morbius, and mesh the film well with Morbius possibly meeting Spider-Man. However, the trailers have thus far kept the darkest side of Morbius largely in the background.

In a nutshell, Morbius is one of Marvel's most tragic characters. The trade-off that comes with his transformation is that while he may be cured of his blood disease and now possesses the superhuman abilities of a vampire, he's also cursed with their thirst for human blood. His history in the comics has also had to grapple with the price Morbius is forced to pay for his vampiric nature.

Morbius began in the comics as a Spider-Man villain, and throughout his history has had battles with other Marvel heroes, including the vampire hunter Blade in particular, who Morbius could also encounter. Morbius eventually took a similar path as Venom from villain to anti-hero. Still, the tragedy of his new condition has been as much of a key aspect of the character as vampire abilities.

The Spider-Man animated series of the mid '90s also featured Morbius as a recurring villain. While his transition from villain to anti-hero was part of his story, the show also kept the horrifying side of Morbius as a prisoner to his vampire impulses (within the parameters of what a Fox Kids show could do, that is.) The character could have also made his big-screen debut much sooner, had the deleted Morbius cameo from 1998's Blade stayed, and with the tone of Blade II and the tragic villainy of the film's vampire antagonist Jared Nomak (Luke Goss), it's easy to see Morbius having been portrayed similarly had he appeared.

That all isn't to say that the marketing for Morbius is dropping the ball by emphasizing its title character's exhilaration at discovering his superhuman abilities and being cured of his blood disease. It could, in fact, indicate that the film is keeping the darkest, most tragic side of its character more on the periphery until the movie's debut in January of 2022. Whatever the case may be, the tragedy afflicted to Morbius as a vampire cursed with a human blood lust is a key aspect to his story that the Morbius marketing is downplaying for other teases, so it'll be interesting to see how the film itself approaches this aspect of his story.
