Warning! This article contains spoilers for Mighty Morphin #13
The newest leader taking charge of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is one that used to head up the team in the past but has since become a controversial choice to lead them now. The Power Rangers’ cosmic leader, Zordon, has just been drained of all his power and is seemingly lost forever. Zordon’s supposed demise couldn’t have come at a worse time, as a legion of invaders is heading towards Earth to eliminate the Power Rangers once and for all. The loss of their leader plus the incoming threat forced the Rangers to turn to someone who previously left the team in disgrace.
In Mighty Morphin #13 by Ryan Parrott and Marco Renna, the Guardians of Eltar arrive at the Rangers’ Command Center and along with their extremely hostile forces. The Guardians were once considered allies as they represent Zordon’s homeworld, though they have fallen under the command of the villainous Supreme Guardian Zartus, and therefore can no longer be considered friendly. After the Command Center is breached, the Rangers are forced to regroup at Promethea, a tech company founded by former Red Ranger Grace Sterling. Upon their assessment of the Eltarian threat, Sterling takes command of the Rangers as she once did before shamefully leaving the team decades earlier.
Introduced in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #17 by Kyle Higgins, Hendry Prasetya, and Matt Herms, Grace Sterling led the Power Rangers back in 1969 against a threat that she didn’t properly assess before sending in the team. In the process, the Power Rangers were decimated with all of them dying except Sterling. After that event, she left the team and opened the tech company Promethea where she stayed until now, when she is once again called upon to pick up the mantle of the Power Rangers' leader once again.
Coming back to lead the Power Rangers after losing her entire team in battle is a controversial move to be sure, but is the only one the Power Rangers have left. Even though Sterling lost to a powerful force all those years ago, she has the most experience going up against a similarly formidable threat. Now that the Guardians of Eltar are making their move against the Rangers, the team will need the experience and guidance of the former Red Ranger in order to make it through the ordeal.
Not only will Sterling be able to offer her experience in leading the Power Rangers, but she will also now have the chance to redeem herself. After losing her first team, Sterling gave up and left the Rangers in disgrace, carrying with her the enormous guilt over failing her team. Now, facing the similarly epic threat posed by the Guardians of Eltar, Sterling can finally have the chance to redeem herself. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers have elected a new controversial leader in Grace Sterling, but it may be the only chance they have at defeating the incoming threat and the only chance Sterling has at finding redemption as a Power Ranger.
