The songwriter for Disney's upcoming animated feature Encanto, Lin-Manuel Miranda, says that he enjoyed writing the music for the film. Encanto follows the extraordinary Madrigal family that live hidden in the mountains of Colombia in an enchanted town called Encanto. Every member of the family possesses a unique magical ability, except for Mirabel, who is the only ordinary Madrigal. When the magic of Encanto and its inhabitants is under threat, it is up to Mirabel who must go on a quest to save them.
Encanto marks a major milestone for Disney as it is their 60th animated feature title. The film stars Brooklyn 99 alumni Stephanie Beatriz, who lends her voice to Mirabe. The actress is is joined by a cast that includes Diane Guerrero (Orange Is The New Black, Doom Patrol), John Leguizamo (Ice Age, John Wick), and Alan Tudyk (Firefly, Rogue One), to name just a few. The film will be composed by Germaine Franco (Coco), with original songs set to be written by the creator of Hamilton and In The Heights, Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Walt Disney Animation Studios recently released a featurette that highlights the team behind the making of Encanto, including the official songwriter for the film, Miranda. He spoke with great enthusiasm about being part of the project, stating that it was an "amazing experience" to be able to contribute to the songwriting process and "immerse myself in the music of Colombia." His full quote can be read below:
“It was an amazing experience immersing myself in the music of Colombia, and it was such a joy writing songs for these incredible characters. This movie is about family, and your role within your family. I hope that people go see it with their families. I think people will see themselves in the different family members. It’s just a joyous experience.”
Miranda has been making waves in the film industry for the best part of the last decade after seamlessly transitioning from the world of theatre. He has been credited with cameo appearances in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Rise of Skywalker, and also starred alongside Emily Blunt in the fantasy musical Mary Poppins Returns. Encanto isn't Miranda's first collaboration with Disney for an animated feature film. He also wrote and performed many of the songs for 2016's Moana, which were very well-received. However, he is set to make an even larger contribution to his sophomore Disney project as it's been confirmed that he will be writing at least eight original songs for Encanto, both in English and Spanish.
Encanto premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on November 3 and has been generating plenty of buzz, with critics lavishing the film with praise in early reviews. On the heels of a successful first attempt with Moana, Miranda's music is set to play a massive part in accompanying what promises to be yet another visually dazzling adventure for the celebrated studio giant. Thankfully, Disney fans won't have to wait much longer to catch Encanto, or to hear what the iconic musical creator has in store for its accompanying soundtrack.
