Every Nina Dobrev Horror Movie Ranked | Screen Rant

Nina Dobrev recently returned to screens with Love Hard, but what horror movies has the Vampire Diaries star appeared in? Since her career began in the mid-‘00s, Nina Dobrev has been no stranger to the horror genre. The actor received her big break by starring in The Vampire Diaries, a supernatural soap so enduringly popular that its spinoff The Originals received a spinoff, Legacies.

However, Dobrev’s starring role in the horror/fantasy series did not necessarily translate to many parts as a big-screen scream queen. The actor’s most recent starring role is in the romantic comedy Love Hard, and she has spent the last few years mostly cropping up in indie dramedies and TV roles. That said, Dobrev has got a few horror movies to her name, even if the movies in question vary in quality.

Dobrev’s first movie role came in the form of a cameo in 2008’s cult hit Repo The Genetic Opera, and she would not return to horror again until a supporting part in 2011’s The Roommate. After that, Dobrev’s next horror part came in 2015’s The Final Girls, a meta-slasher released shortly before The Babysitter series and Happy Death Day movies reignited interest in the sub-genre. Finally, Dobrev appeared in 2017’s Flatliners remake, marking her fourth foray into the horror genre. Here's how her horrors rank in comparison to each other.

Flatliners was a 2017 remake of the ‘90s supernatural thriller of the same name, and can boast the questionable achievement of being is as lifeless as its title suggests. In fairness to the flawed film, Flatliners is no worse than the original movie, which led some genre fans to wonder why such a forgotten genre outing was remade at all. Nonetheless, the 2017 Flatliners wastes a stellar cast including Dobrev and Elliot Page, much like the original horror movie wasted Kevin Bacon. As such, it is Dobrev’s weakest genre outing.

Fortunately for Dobrev, she only has a minor role in the 2011 dud The Roommate. The Roommate offered a more anodyne and generic retread of campy ‘90s classic Single White Female, telling the predictable and unfortunately bloodless story of an unhinged stalker becoming obsessed with her college roommate. Leighton Meester works hard to make the villainess compelling, but can’t elevate this deeply un-scary and predictable chiller despite her best efforts.

A cult phenomenon, Repo! The Genetic Opera gave Dobrev her first movie role in a minor cameo as a background character. The ambitious horror satire musical mashup remains beloved by fans despite its flaws and its lesser sequels, though Dobrev’s almost non-existent role means it is hard to credit the actor with its success. That said, even one good horror movie is more than many actors can boast on their CVs and Repo! The Genetic Opera is the first genuinely solid outing in the genre for Dobrev.

Funny, poignant, and inventive, The Final Girls is a 2015 meta-slasher that combines a killer premise with a superb cast to become far more than the sum of its parts. The tale of a grieving girl and her mismatched band of friends being pulled into a campy slasher starring the heroine’s late mother, The Final Girls has no right to work as well as it does. Nonetheless, the underrated horror-comedy proves to be a moving, sly, and clever love letter to horror cinema and remains The Vampire Diaries star’s best outing in the genre by far ahead of the release of Love Hard.
