Warning! Spoilers for Marvel's Eternals.
Marvel's Eternals brings some of the most powerful characters in comic book history to the big screen, but the film unfortunately still ends up shortchanging some of the galactic gods. The film focuses on the titular team of immortal, ageless beings placed on Earth by entities known as the Celestials in order to guide mankind's progress. Eternals has a vast scale, and certainly the most sweeping historical scope of any MCU film to date. However, there's one key area where it falls short.
Eternals includes the characters Ajak (Salma Hayek) and Gilgamesh (Don Lee), two of Marvel Comics' most immensely powerful beings. The new movie gives audiences a taste of what each of them is capable of, but the problem is that it's only just a taste and not much more. In the comics, Gilgamesh is believed to physically be the strongest Eternal, while the mighty warrior Ajak may just be the most powerful of them all. Their respective levels of strength and endurance are gargantuan, and both are wasted in the new film.
Hayek's Ajak is particularly underutilized. Despite being the leader of the Eternals, Ajak's role is actually relatively minor. He is primarily shown in flashbacks to the Eternals overlooking humanity in ancient times, helping Angelina Jolie's Thena battle her mysterious illness, and debating whether to adhere to their rule of non-intervention. When Ajak decides to lead the Eternals to prevent the world-ending Emergence, she's thrown to the Deviants by Ikaris (Richard Madden), preventing the film from fully showcasing what the character could have done in the climactic final battle.
Similarly, Gilgamesh also dies as the hands of Kro (Bill Skarsgard), and the movie doesn't quite give a full picture of the strength he wields. He's also shown in the flashbacks to the Eternals' long history on Earth, and admittedly there are some decent displays of his power in both the past and present. Still, for a character who can lift 100 tons and supposedly go toe-to-toe with the "Mad Titan" Thanos in a physical battle, Eternals doesn't quite paint the epic depiction of Gilgamesh that many fans were hoping for.
With both Ajak and Gilgamesh being killed off in the new MCU entry, they unfortunately don't get the same chance to amaze audiences with their abilities as some of their fellow Eternals. Nonetheless, with the cliffhanger ending of Eternals, they will surely be seen again in the future, with the post-credits scene teasing Thanos' brother Eros (Harry Styles), and Black Knight (Kit Harington) as potential allies in their next adventure. Hopefully, there will also be a resurrection element in play for both Ajak and Gilgamesh, in order for them to get the chance to really showcase what they can do.
