Elizabeth Berkley Wants Leah Remini On Saved By The Bell Reboot

Saved by the Bell star Elizabeth Berkley wants Leah Remini to appear on the reboot. Premiering on Peacock in November of last year, the reboot mixes characters from the original Saved by the Bell series with a new generation of students. Along with Berkley, who plays Jessie Spano, other actors that reprised their roles include Mario Lopez as Slater, Mark-Paul Gosselaar as Zack, Tiffani Thiessen as Kelly, and Lark Voorhies as Lisa.

The original Saved by the Bell and its spinoffs featured several young performers that would go on to be recognized for other projects later in their careers. Remini was one of those actors, having played Stacey Carosi in six episodes of season 3. Introduced on the show as a bit of a tough shell to crack, Stacey is initially unimpressed with Zack Morris. Gradually, however, Stacey finds herself warming up to Zack and the two develop a brief relationship. Zack has changed a lot in the reboot, even becoming the Governor of California in a humorous twist, but references to his past still occasionally pop up.

Speaking with ET to promote Saved by the Bell season 2, which arrives to the Peacock streaming service on November 24, Berkley revealed that she’s had conversations with Remini about making an appearance in the reboot. Berkley notes that these conversations happened before season 1, referencing the fact that Stacey’s storyline on the original Saved by the Bell was largely limited to the Malibu Sands Beach Club setting. Berkley said it would be "a dream" to have the actress back in the series. Read her full quote below.

“I talked to her early on before season 1. We chatted a bit and I said, ‘It would be a dream to have you back. There are so many incredible places that we all traveled to outside of Bayside. […] We would love to do that. You just never know who can come visiting Bayside.”

Remini, who is best known for her role in the CBS sitcom The King of Queens, and for speaking out about her experiences with Scientology, may well appear in a potential third installment of Peacock’s Saved by the Bell. Still, according to Berkley, season 2 does include a reference to Stacey. The actress doesn’t reveal too much about how Stacey gets mentioned. But it’s noted that the quick reference is “genius.” The reboot has shown a capacity for this, as executive producer Tracey Wigfield previously spoke about including mentions and Easter eggs to the original while still keeping the focus on a new generation of Bayside High students.

Saved by the Bell season 2, for all of its laughs and meta jokes, will also include a tribute to Dustin Diamond. Diamond played the beloved character Screech and passed away in February. The cast has previously discussed paying tribute to the Screech actor, as the premiere episode of the new season of Saved by the Bell will see the original stars share an moving scene that honors Diamond. It will certainly be emotional for fans of the show as well, many of whom had hoped to see Diamond return to his long-running portrayal. While the actor will long be remembered for his classic character, the Saved by the Bell reboot continues to celebrate the show's legacy, potentially by bringing back more special guests like Remini in future.
