Dexter: New Blood Showrunner Says the Ending Will Blow Up the Internet

Dexter: New Blood will have an ending that according to showrunner Clyde Phillips, will break the internet. Phillips was the original showrunner of Dexter for the first four seasons and is being brought back to helm the revival that will star Michael C. Hall, who is reprising the titular character Dexter Morgan after portraying him for eight seasons. The continuation will take place ten years after the season 8 finale and will feature ten episodes with a mix of new cast members and original Dexter characters.

Dexter: New Blood will be sharply different than the original series, with Dexter Morgan having relocated to a visually and geographically different location in the snowy town of Iron Lake in upstate New York. Due to his new location and hidden identity now that he is operating under the alias of Jim Lindsay, he will be surrounded by an entirely different community of people, which will be unfamiliar to fans who have watched the entire original run and saw Dexter working at a police station in tropical Miami.

In an interview with TVLine, Phillips teased the ending of Dexter: New Blood by saying that it will be a shocking one that will have fans talking online. With the original Dexter finale is almost universally despised and numerous fans believing that Dexter deserved a more conclusive resolution, many believed that the main reason for the revival would be to use the opportunity to fix what happened in the final episode that aired in 2013 and the events leading up to it. When talking about the ending of the season and what the status is behind the scenes currently, Phillips commented:

"It’s going to be surprising, inevitable and it’s going to blow up the Internet. It is, I personally think, the best thing I’ve written. Our director Marcos Siega, who could not be more experienced and a better friend of the show, thinks it’s the best thing he’s ever directed. I haven’t seen it yet, by the way. I only saw it get shot. We’re editing Episodes 7 and 8 right now, so I haven’t seen 10 yet. I can’t wait, to tell you the truth."

The stunning revelation by Phillips will no doubt cause viewers to speculate the scenarios that will happen in the revival. For all of Phillips' tenure, Dexter was considered quality television for viewers and critics and when it was announced that he would leave the show, the series was at its high point with a shocking season 4 finale that also had audiences talking about it online for many months before the next season. Since then, despite having some peak moments, many have argued that the show had a slow decrease in quality and the continuing events from subsequent Dexter seasons became harder to digest.

With the reveal by Phillips about the uproarious ending of the show as well as his confidence in it, it is optimistic and hopeful that Dexter: New Blood will bring justice to the legacy of the series. The new cast will include Clancy Brown as the central villain, Julia Jones as Dexter's new girlfriend, Jack Alcott as his son Harrison, Alano Miller, Johnny Sequoyah, Michael Cyril Creighton, and Jamie Chung. The multiple photos and trailers to tease the season of Dexter: New Blood has given viewers a promising glimpse of what will come of the revival. With the first episode having premiered, the finale will be imminent and fans will soon see if the ending will stick the landing this time.
