Dexter: How Much Time Has Passed Between Season 8 & New Blood

In Dexter season 9, it’s apparent that a significant period of time has passed since the events of the original series finale, but where does New Blood fit into the Dexter timeline? While original showrunner Clyde Phillips has confirmed that New Blood won’t retcon the widely hated Dexter season 8 finale, it will provide a new ending that will, hopefully, be more satisfying for viewers. Releasing on November 7th, 2021, season 9 will see titular character Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) living under an assumed name in a small town in New York, where he works as a sales associate in a fish-and-game shop, but it won’t take long for his “Dark Passenger” to make a return.

In 2006, one of television’s favorite anti-heroes was born. The season 3 finale of Dexter was watched by over 1.5 million viewers, resulting in the highest ratings for an original series that Showtime had received since 2004. Dexter continued to break Showtime records throughout the rest of its 8-season run and was nominated for 24 Primetime Emmy Awards. Many audience members felt that the show went downhill during its last few seasons, however, and even Michael C. Hall didn’t like the Dexter series finale. New Blood aims to fix this by giving Dexter another ending.

Released in 2013, the finale to the original series left off in Oregon with Dexter starting a new life as a lumberjack, after faking his own death in a hurricane. Season 9 somewhat emulates the real-world time that has passed since, as New Blood picks up 10 years later, with Dexter now living in the fictional town of Iron Lake, New York. Using the alias Jim Lindsay, he is also dating a police officer and leads a quiet life as a sales associate at Fred’s Fish & Game. Dexter’s son Harrison, played by Jack Alcott this time around, is now a teenager.

A few other characters make a return to the series as well. Season 4’s illustrious Trinity Killer (John Lithgow) is set to make an appearance in Dexter season 9, as is Dexter’s sister Debra Morgan (Jennifer Carpenter). It's clear that his sister's death has weighed heavy on Dexter in the many years that have passed, as Deb now exists as Dexter’s Dark Passenger, taking the place of their father Harry (James Remar) in his mind. Dexter’s former love interest Hannah (Yvonne Strahovski) is not in the new season. Ten years after he sent her to Argentina with Harrison, Hannah is no longer in Dexter’s life.

In Iron Lake, Dexter is surrounded by such faces as Alano Miller playing a police sergeant and Jamie Chung who plays a true-crime podcaster based out of Los Angeles. Iron Lake’s first Native American police chief, Angela Bishop, is played by Julia Jones, and serves as Dexter’s new love interest. New Blood's main antagonist is the “unofficial mayor” of Iron Lake, Kurt Caldwell (Clancy Brown). While a whole new cast of characters may seem jarring to fans of the original Showtime series, the new additions help drive home just how much time has passed in Dexter: New Blood, and just how different the serial killer's life has become.
