Demon’s Souls, the Remake for the PS5 brings with it a new game mode aimed at veteran players. Fractured Mode, provides a new challenge by literally mirroring the original game. However, the game mode provides more than just a challenge, as it also hides some exclusive items that will unlock the Penetrator armor set.
Fractured Mode is a game mode exclusive to the PS5 remake version of Demon’s Souls. In this mode, the world and characters are flipped on a vertical axis, inverting the right and left sides. This can provide a somewhat disorienting experience for veterans as the maps they knew become more confusing, and characters become left-handed.
Hidden throughout the levels in Demon’s Souls Fractured Mode are several Ceramic Coins. To acquire the Penetrator armor set, players will need to trade 26 of these to Sparkly the Crow. To date, 13 of these have been found, which means that acquiring the set in the traditional way, will require New Game+. Additionally, players will need both Pure White and Pure Black World Tendency to get all 13 in one game cycle.
To achieve Pure White World Tendency, players must refrain from invading and killing harmless NPC’s in Demon's Souls. Additionally, defeating demon bosses and Black Phantoms will push the World Tendency towards white. Players should avoid being in body form while traversing worlds, as dying in that form pushes the current World Tendency towards black. The following coins can only be obtained if the world is in Pure White Tendency.
- Gates of Boletaria: After rescuing Ostrava, there will be a room with a door that was broken by two soldiers. Destroy the furniture in that room to find the first coin.
- Inner Ward: In the area with the Ninjas and the rolling boulder, there will be an open path halfway up the stairs. Go through and keep going forward to jump down a ledge and then climb up a ladder. Destroy the wooden boxes in the corner in front of the ladder.
- Inner Ward: In the courtyard near the boss fog gate, get on the upper walkway to the left (Fractured Mode) until two crossbow enemies appear. In the left corner, near some crows that will fly away when the player gets close, is a barrel with the coin inside.
- Tunnel City: Near the Underground Temple there are caves filled with lava and Bearbug enemies. In the room with the two big Bearbugs, there will be a small island in the middle of the lava. Players should be very careful when crossing to the island for the coin as lava can be very dangerous in Demon's Souls. It can be found on that island inside one of the molted shells.
- Prison of Hope: Near the Prisoner Horde there is a small room with a spiked chair. Break the chair to get the coin.
- Island’s Edge: In a box in the corner of the cell where the Grave Robber is found.
- Swamp of Sorrows: After the fog door there will be scaffolds leading upwards. Follow them until there is a drop. Then look at the wall and drop in the narrow gap. On the stone ledge, there will be a wooden box. The coin will be inside. This coin is known to sometimes bug and not appear. If it happens, reload the game and try again.
To get the rest of the coins for the Penetrator armor set in Demon's Souls, players must also visit worlds that are in pure black. Fortunately, achieving Pure Black World Tendency is somewhat easier and faster. Players can kill harmless NPCs such as vendors or invade and defeat other players as Black Phantoms. Additionally, losing body form in a world also pushes it towards black. The following coins can only be obtained if the world is in Pure Black Tendency.
- The Lord’s Path: In the tower, before the boss fight there is a room with a winch and a crystal lizard. Break the table near the winch to find the coin.
- Inner Ward: In the area before the two Fat Official Black Phantoms spawn, there is a railing to the right side (Fractured mode) which can be vaulted over. There will be some barrels tucked in a corner. The coin will be inside.
- Smithing Grounds: In the area with the Fire Lizards hanging on the walls, head down until dogs attack. Take care as these can be quite problematic enemies in Demon's Souls, due to their speed and small hitboxes. In a corner, there are some boxes around a pile of ore. Break the boxes to find the coin.
- Prison of Hope: Near the tower that leads to the back of the ballista, there is a courtyard with closed grated gates. In front of the gates, are some boxes which hold the coin.
- The Ritual Path: In one of the boxes, in the hole Patches kicks players into.
- Swamp of Sorrows: In a box, on the second floor of a building in the shanty town area before the Dirty Colossus boss.
Players will need two game cycles of Demon’s Souls to get all 26 coins. Afterward, head over to Sparkly the Crow at the top of Shrine of Storms and trade all 26 Ceramic Coins. Sparkly will then give the players a Rusted Key. Players should then go to the Inner Ward and through the door leading to where Yuria, the advanced spells vendor in Demon's Souls, is first found. Go through the narrow alley near the carriage. Follow the path to the end, and hit the illusory wall behind the boxes to dispel it. Use the Rusted Key on the revealed door and find the four-piece Penetrator armor set on a body lying on a bench.
Players that want to avoid this grind can instead receive the Ceramic Coins from someone who already has them. Although the Ceramic Coins cannot be traditionally dropped, a Blue Phantom can still attempt to trade with Sparkly the Crow. Keep in mind this is technically an exploit, as the Ceramic Coins are not meant to be tradeable, so players should attempt this at their own risk. The Blue Phantom should begin by dropping the Ceramic Coins in Sparkly's nest. The host should then save, exit, and reload the game while the Blue Phantom is still in their world. When logging back on, Sparkly will either have dropped the Rusted Key, if all 26 coins were traded, or he will refund whatever number of coins were dropped by the Blue Phantom to the host.
Demon's Souls Remake is available on PlayStation 5.
