Scream franchise star David Arquette says that his co-star and ex-wife Courtney Cox hated him during the filming of 1997’s Scream 2. The sequel came just a year after the tremendous and unexpected success of Wes Craven's first Scream film one year earlier. Arquette has played Woodsboro’s goofy yet dependable police deputy Dewey Riley in every Scream film to date. He last appeared in the most recent Scream entry, Scream 4, in 2011.
Some fans might argue that Scream 2 was rushed into production while the first Scream was still in theatres, and therefore lacked the time to develop into something more unique. However, the film still did well at the box office – though not quite as well as its hit predecessor. Original Scream writer Kevin Williamson apparently included a five-page outline for a Scream sequel when he sold the first script, and when it became clear that Scream was a major success, the decision was made to move forward with a second movie based on Williamson’s outline. As it turned out, Scream 2 proved to be a pivotal moment for the burgeoning franchise, with crowd favourite Randy (Jamie Kennedy) being killed off, and fans left wondering if Dewey would be okay.
Beneath the surface of the increasing popularity of the Scream series, romance was also blossoming. Arquette and Cox, whose on-screen relationship seemed to be the sweetest thing about a film series that focused primarily on horror and slaughter, were actually involved in a real-life relationship. The two met on the set of the first Scream and were eventually married and had a daughter together. Unfortunately, the couple divorced in 2013, and while being interviewed recently on Late Night With Seth Meyers, Arquette joked that Cox loved him during Scream and "hated" him by Scream 2:
"But thank god for Wes Craven because I got a baby out of it. I mean, not Wes Craven, thank Courtney Cox! No, the first Scream we were falling in love, the second Scream, she hated me."
Arquette also went on to speak about the daughter he shares with Cox, 17-year-old Coco, and how the two Scream stars always love working together on a film. Along with Neve Campbell’s character Sidney Prescott, Dewey and Gale Weathers (Cox) are the only characters to survive every sequel to date, and fans have long been invested in their romance both on and off screen. Now, with Scream 5 due for release in 2022, online conjecture from fans as to what will happen to the trio this time around has become as varied as the sequels themselves. Some feel that the remaining cast members should all be killed off in order for the franchise to truly evolve into something new, while others argue that killing off the characters would be a big mistake for the series.
So far, information regarding Scream 5 is scarce at best. Substantial efforts have been made to avoid any plot leaks, and even the film’s trailer was difficult to assemble, given the amount of potential spoilers the footage contained. Still, Paramount has succeeded to date at keeping things hush-hush, unlike back in 1997 when portions of the Scream 2 plot leaked online. Things have certainly changed since 1997 – especially with regard to Arquette and Cox – but fans remain delighted to have the pair back in Scream 2022. Thankfully, it seems that they are genuinely delighted, too.
