Two sides of a multiversal coin, Catwoman and Black Cat both originated as some of their respective universe’s most popular rogues before branching off to become morally gray fan-favorite staples. While both feline antiheroes were inspired by the same animal for their alter egos and both are among the best thieves in comic books, their power levels are very different, which begs the question: who would win in a fight?
Before a definitive conclusion can be drawn, both Catwoman and Black Cat’s separate comic book feats must be explored. While both have proven time and again that they are outstanding cat burglars and have each pulled off amazingly intricate heists - from Black Cat stealing a magical artifact from Doctor Strange to Catwoman robbing a train. However, in this comparison, no level of burglary can save either of them as the two will hypothetically be squaring off in a one-on-one brawl with only one possible victor.
Possibly the most impressive demonstration of fighting ability shown by Catwoman, aside from her occasional bouts with Batman, is when she went toe-to-toe with one of the most deadly assassins in the DC Universe, Lady Shiva. In Batman: Hush by Jeph Joeb and Jim Lee, Catwoman faces off against Lady Shiva and holds her own against the trained killer. Unfortunately, Catwoman loses the fight, but recovers almost immediately and continues to display her fighting abilities against a deadly foe that even Batman has trouble with.
Meanwhile, Black Cat’s most impressive fight has to be when she challenged an entire army of symbiotes during the King In Black crossover event. When Knull came to Earth, Black Cat was in the middle of a heist that was interrupted by the invasion. Black Cat went to the source of the attack to investigate and found an army of symbiotes swarming the area. She put her fighting skills to the test, basically battling a handful of Venoms all at once and surviving where other heroes, including Doctor Strange and Captain America, had fallen. While examples of Black Cat’s one-on-one fighting abilities are limited, the truth is she could fight virtually anyone and win because of a supernatural power she possesses. Black Cat has the power to project bad luck on others, like the superstition associated with her name.
Due to her bad luck-projecting advantage, Black Cat would be the winner in the fight against Catwoman. Catwoman is a brilliant fighter, but she has just as limited experience in hand-to-hand combat as Black Cat with no supernatural abilities that could have given her that extra edge. In the question of which feline antihero would win in a fight between Catwoman and Black Cat, Black Cat is decidedly the winner.
