Call of Duty: Vanguard Update Adds Iconic Shipment Map With WW2 Theme

Editor’s Note: A lawsuit has been filed against Activision Blizzard by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, which alleges the company has engaged in abuse, discrimination, and retaliation against its female employees. Activision Blizzard has denied the allegations. The full details of the Activision Blizzard lawsuit (content warning: rape, suicide, abuse, harassment) are being updated as new information becomes available.

The latest update for Call of Duty: Vanguard adds the franchise's iconic close-quartered map, Shipment, returning from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warefare with a brand-new decked out World War II theme created for the title's new setting. The latest entry to the annual Call of Duty series launched on November 5 and features a comeback to World War II action with a cinematic campaign, competitive multiplayer, and signature co-op Zombie modes that began during the same setting a decade ago.

Originally released in 2007 as a part of Infinity Ward's revolutionary Call of Duty 4: Modern Warefare, Shipment is the smallest map in the Call of Duty series and allows players to easily gain XP in a chaotic symmetrical arena built as a spawn kill extravaganza. Due to its popularity among long-time fans, the map has been re-released throughout multiple Call of Duty titles over the years in numerous distinctive forms. These range from traditional remasters to complete reimaginings that fit in with a game's specific storyline or setting. Most recently, Shipment made an appearance in CoD: Mobile, introducing the Modern Warfare version of the map to both long-time and newer mobile players who had never experienced the tiny battleground before.

According to patch notes on the official Sledgehammer Games website, the iconic Shipment reskinned as a World War II map is now available for all Call of Duty: Vanguard players. For the first time ever, the map features destructible environments similar to other Vanguard maps and its containers are no longer bulletproof due to being made up of wooden boards. To celebrate its release, Sledgehammer has added a Shipment 24/7 playlist of mixed modes to the game, allowing players to jump right into the simplistic yet chaotic map. Besides adding the close-range map to the game, the patch also fixes an issue where a PlayStation 5 bug stopped players from starting up Vanguard if they had less than 40GB of space. Additionally, the update addressed an issue that caused players' systems to crash when attempting to send a clan invite, and another in-game bug that prevented some weapon camos from being equipped.

As well as the new update, Activision recently announced a Free Access Multiplayer weekend for the World War II first-person shooter. Starting November 18 and concluding on November 22, players who don't already own the title can jump into Call of Duty: Vanguard for free on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC. During the free weekend, players will get access to Vanguard's multiplayer modes, with new weapons that can be leveled up before they are made available for Call of Duty: Warzone, along with a dozen new operators, and 17 maps.

The return of Shipment could help bolster interest in Vanguard, which launched at a tough time for first-person shooters. With Battlefield 2042 and Halo Infinite's multiplayer drawing attention, along with ongoing controversies at Activision, Vanguard is seemingly struggling to garner the same level of attention as previous games in the series. While Call of Duty: Vanguard experienced a slow start in comparison to other Call of Duty launches, it's possible that the free weekend and the addition of Shipment could help improve sales of CoD: Vanguard.
