Call of Duty: Vanguard has some difficult moments in the campaign, including the charge portion of the Operation Tonga mission. Early in the game, players embark on Operation Tonga and battle Nazis in various scenarios. During this mission, players jump into the boots of Arthur Kingsley before he became the leader of Task Force One. Kingsley is joined by several other characters played by notable cast members. This sets off a chain of events players must finish to beat the level.
During the Operation Tonga mission, players will wake up washed ashore near the woods. Over the course of the next 30 minutes or so, players will make it through various obstacles and enemy troops to eventually reach an exfiltration point. Players then hop into the back of a truck and trigger a cutscene dealing with the getaway.
After finishing the cutscene, players will hop out of the truck with a new objective: prepare to assault the gun battery. Follow Thomas Jones to the edge of the soldier’s position, where players will scout the land with Richard Webb. Richard explains that there are multiple Nazi outposts ahead in trenches and bunkers. Players then take control of a truck and silently drive it down the hill as not to alert the Nazis. At the bottom of the hill, allied soldiers jump out of the trucks and position themselves for an assault of enemy defenses.
Beating this portion of the game's campaign mode is similar to beating the D-Day missions found in other WWII games. There are enemy machine guns mowing down allied soldiers with only one path forward toward the bunker. Players must run to the trench located in front of the enemy bunker and regroup with allies. At this point, Kingsley gives the order to attack, and the new objective is revealed: initiate the charge. Allied soldiers then charge the bunker across an open field and predictably get vanquished with machine gun fire. It is the player’s duty to reach the bunker unharmed and take out the MG nests and other enemies inside.
The main objective is to run through the field as fast as possible without dying. Aim for the left-hand side of the enemy trenches and run toward the wooden pallet structure at the edge of the trench. Use allied soldiers as human shields; stay behind them while running to minimize damage to Kingsley. Once players reach the left side of the trenches, it is time to shoot all the Nazis lying in wait. If there are enough allies shielding bullets from Kingsley, and the weapon bloom effect isn't overwhelming, the charge is a straightforward objective to complete.
Call of Duty: Vanguard is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5.
