A new piece of Batgirl fanart imagines Brendan Fraser as Firefly. DCEU's long-gestating movie has finally begun to take shape in recent months. Originally, the film was to be written, directed, and produced by Joss Whedon, with plans for production to kick off in 2018, but he quit the project before the movie could begin filming, citing troubles with defining his take on the story. Following his exit, Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson was hired to pen the screenplay, and she has since been developing a story for the most popular incarnation of the comics superheroine - Barbara Gordon. The new Batgirl movie will stream on HBO Max instead of opening in cinemas, and although a firm release date hasn't been announced, the film is expected to premiere sometime in 2022.
As of May 2021, Batgirl has noticeably ramped up its progress. First, the Bad Boys for Life directing duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah were announced as the movie's directors, and in July, In the Heights star Leslie Grace was cast in the titular role. An exclusive panel for the movie was additionally screened at this year's DC FanDome, where the concept art for Grace's superhero costume was unveiled. Shortly after that event, Batgirl announced that it had cast actor Jacob Scipio in an undisclosed role, and a week later it was also revealed that The Mummy star Brendan Fraser would play the film's villain, Firefly.
Now, a new artwork by digital artist m.design34 envisions how Fraser could look as Firefly in Batgirl. One image puts him in a firefighter costume and equips him with a respirator gas mask. Another offers an unmasked look at the character, putting his charred face and scars on full display. Take a look at the artist's work below:

Firefly/Garfield Lynns was created by France Herron and Dick Sprang for Detective Comics #184 in 1952. Originally, the character was introduced as a troubled pyromaniac who accidentally scars himself in an attempt to burn Gotham to the ground. But that story was tweaked during the character's live-action appearance in the TV series Arrow, where Firefly was shown to be a former firefighter who becomes a violent recluse seeking vengeance on his crewmates after they abandoned him during a massive building fire accident. As per Batgirl's casting report, the movie appears to be sticking with the firefighter backstory for the DC villain, although it's unclear if traits from other versions will also be incorporated into the character.
The artist's impressive rendition quite authentically depicts what Fraser could look like as the sociopathic pyromaniac. His look in the artwork strikingly matches Andrew Dunbar's appearance as the Firefly in Arrow, incorporating everything from the character's severed eye to his burnt scalp. In fact, the suit that Fraser is wearing in the fanart is the same as the one Dunbar wore in The CW's show, and if Batgirl chooses to adopt a similar backstory as its Arrowverse counterpart, the visual choices could be quite similar. Of course, the movie could always go in another direction, giving Fraser the synthetic, fireproof costume from the comics, but for any certainty on that, fans will need to wait for set photos and BTS clips to emerge from Batgirl.
