Animal Crossing: Farming Guide (Tips, Tricks, & Getting Started)

Animal Crossing: New Horizons' 2.0 free update surprised fans with an early launch on November 3, introducing cooking and farming to the game. Cooking and farming are two long-awaited functions in Animal Crossing: New Horizons that allow players to plant crops and harvest them to make tasty dishes.

After pumpkins were added to Animal Crossing in its Fall 2020 update, players were able to enjoy a taste of the farming function before it was fully integrated into the last major content update to 2.0. While it’s been over a year since any crop-growing features were added, players are now able to construct the fully-formed farm of their dreams with a variety of different crops players can put to good use in the new cooking mechanic.

Players can now cook up a variety of meals and desserts with the ingredients they gather, which can either be eaten or used as decorations. Most cooking recipes in Animal Crossing: New Horizons require produce to make, so players who want to become master chefs should invest their time into building a productive farm. The update includes five crops that can be grown from starters: tomatoes, potatoes, sugar cane, wheat, and carrots.

To start farming in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, players will need to obtain produce starts to plant on their islands. Some of the DIY+ cooking recipes also make use of several types of food that were already available, including fruit, pumpkins, mushrooms, and fish.

Produce starts can be purchased from Leif, who visits the town at random. Leif’s shop can also be unlocked on Harv’s Island after players donate 100,000 Bells to his garden stand. Leif will have two produce starts available each day, which cost 280 Bells each, or 1,400 for five. Players also have a chance to find produce on island tours with Kapp’n, which can be taken once per day for 1,000 Nook Miles.

Once they’ve gathered some produce starts, players can plant them in the ground on grass or dirt. Produce will grow on its own without being tended to and doesn’t need to be watered, but watering produce will increase how many crops grow per plant. Watering produce every day for three days in a row will yield three crops instead of just one. Those ingredients can be combined in any kitchen to create the new dishes available in the update. Players who have been eagerly awaiting the ability to farm and cook in Animal Crossing: New Horizons can now enjoy a bountiful harvest with all of the ingredients that can be grown and gathered on their island.
