Age of Empires 4 introduces four new campaign modes for solo play, including the Hundred Years' War campaign. Each campaign in Age of Empires 4 is centered around a different empire, with the Hundred Years’ War focusing on the French civilization. In Age of Empires 4, the French civilization is similar to, but more powerful than, the English and are unique due to their cavalry units and impressive siege technology; not even the Mountain, Hafþór Björnsson, can stop French siege weapons.
The French civilization is not the easiest civilization to master in Age of Empires 4, but it is still possible to perform well with them. The French civilization has unique bonuses, units, and strategies that can be used to complete the Hundred Years War campaign. Players will have different tactics they will inevitably like to use with each empire, but different civilizations have certain attributes required to maximize their efficiency in combat.
The French civilization in Age of Empires 4 is not focused on defensive strategies the way the English are. In fact, the French civilization is focused on aggressive tactics to break down opponents’ defenses. Using these aggressive tactics is the only way to truly succeed in the Hundred Years' War campaign. These tactics line up well with history, contributing to Age of Empires 4's historically accurate civilization portrayals.
The French civilization in Age of Empires 4 focuses on mounted combat, gunpowder siege weapons, and strong economic bonuses to fuel their aggressive strategies. The French start the Hundred Years' War campaign being able to produce villagers and scouts 10% more quickly than other civilizations. This bonus increases with each new Age, especially if players choose to build the best French civilization landmarks. This makes it easy to head toward nearby Trade Posts. French Traders can return any specified resource to the market. Trade Posts are shown on the minimap at the start of the campaign, which encourages players to use French Traders often. The French civilization also gathers 20% more gold from Trade Ships, further bolstering its economy.
The French have unique units to back up their economic strongholds. They have the Royal Knight unit, which is heavily armored cavalry that gets bonus damage after charges. Each charge from a Royal Knight unit breaks down enemy defenses, so these units need to be used often for aggressive tactics during the campaign.
Additionally, the French Arbalétrier is a unique ranged unit with high damage and a deployable shield. When playing the French civilization, if a Keep from the third Age is built nearby an Archery Range or a Stable, the resulting Arbalétrier or Royal Knight units cost 20% less gold to produce. Using these unique French units while building up a gold-laden economy assures success when playing the Hundred Years' War campaign in Age of Empires 4.
