In Age of Empires 4, players can age to the next civilization stage in the Chinese civilization by creating landmarks. Landmarks have replaced the mechanic in past Age of Empire games where players needed to build a certain number of buildings to reach a new era. Most civilizations like the Chinese have two Landmarks to choose from in each age, and only one can be constructed per game, although the Chinese civilization has the unique ability to create any Landmark from a previous age once they reach that new age. By gathering the needed materials, players can advance their Chinese empire as soon as possible with the best Landmark of that age.
There are three ages that every civilization needs to reach in Age of Empires 4. After gathering enough materials for the Landmark of their choice, Chinese civilization players will reach the Feudal Age, then the Castle Age, and finally the Imperial Age. Each Landmark displays how many resources are required to advance to the next age, as well as the benefits that come along with building the Landmark. Players who excel at real-time strategy games may be able to challenge themselves with various Landmarks, but ultimately each civilization has a clear path for which Landmarks are easiest to use.
The Chinese civilization in Age of Empires 4 is without a doubt one of the more complex civilizations to navigate. It is more dynamic than the Holy Roman Empire in Age of Empires 4. In addition to being able to create Landmarks like all other civilizations, the Chinese civilization allows players to create a Landmark from a previous civilization to age them onto the next. For example, a player could craft one of the Feudal Age Landmarks, and the remaining one to reach the Castle Age. This affects dynasty play units, which is ultimately what the best Chinese Landmarks, namely Barbican of the Sun, Astronomical Clocktower, and Spirit Way.
The Barbican of the Sun Chinese defensive Landmark ages the civilization to the Feudal Age. This Landmark fires a long-range hand cannon and adds arrowslits while garrisoned, and can garrison up to 10 villagers. Additionally, the Barbican of the Sun offers vision into stealth forests. It's a Landmark that is great at protecting and taking down armored forces.
The Astronomical Clocktower is a Chinese military Landmark that advances the civilization to the Castle Age. This landmark is one of the reasons the Chinese civilization can rival the offensive power of the French civilization in Age of Empires 4. The Astronomical Clocktower acts as a siege workshop and produces siege engines with an additional 50% health. Lastly, the Chinese imperial officer can be tasked with supervising the Astronomical Clocktower, producing artillery or siege three times as fast.
Spirit Way is another Chinese military Landmark and it advances the civilization to the Imperial Age. Spirit Way allows all buildings to create previously achieved dynasty units. Additionally, buildings near this landmark produce dynasty units at a 30% reduced cost. Dynasty units are some of the Chinese civilization's most powerful units, making this Landmark invaluable in Age of Empires 4.
