Earlier this year, the 90 Day Fiancé franchise was one of many included in the launch of Discovery+, and its new home on the streaming platform has changed the show forever. The difference between pre-and-post-Discovery+ is very apparent in the latest season of 90 Day: The Single Life, which has gotten criticism for being so over-the-top, particularly with its sexual content. The franchise seems to be moving in a new direction, and it can all be traced back to the launch of the new streaming service.
Though the 90 Day Fiancé franchise started as a modest reality show, it quickly grew in popularity and spawned spin-off after spin-off. In January, it was announced that the beloved franchise, along with many others, would be available on the new streaming service Discovery+. Not only was the core 90 Day Fiancé franchise series available on Discovery+, but there were also several other series that would be exclusive to the streaming platform. Some shows, like 90 Day: The Single Life have proved popular, while others, like 90 Day: Foody Call haven't seen the same success.
Discovery+ has opened up a whole new unrated world for the 90 Day Fiancé franchise, and that’s not necessarily a good thing in the eyes of fans. The franchise shows on the streaming platform are not censored and regularly feature coarse language, nudity, and highly sexual content. Even viewers who don’t consider themselves prudes feel uncomfortable when, say, Stephanie Matto on The Single Life masturbates to cooking videos or Jesse Meester’s bare butt cheeks are on screen far too long. It’s almost as if TLC feels the need to push the envelope simply because it can on Discovery+.
The launch of Discovery+ represents a shift in the franchise, as TLC seems to view the ability to air uncensored content as a challenge. The franchise’s hyper-sexual tone is a recent development, and the change has been jarring for many viewers who aren’t used to that kind of content on 90 Day Fiancé and its spin-offs. A lot of fans think the extremely sexual content is the network’s attempt to keep the franchise interesting, and prefer the wholesome 90 Day Fiancé families from the show’s past. In an effort to remain relevant and edgy, TLC may be alienating viewers who don’t like the new direction the franchise has taken after its jump to Discovery+.
It’s understandable that the 90 Day Fiancé franchise would evolve over the years, but there seems to have been a major change that started when Discovery+ first launched and provided the opportunity for a new kind of show. Most fans aren’t loving the new direction, even though there are benefits that come with the franchise existing all in one place on one streaming service. If the premiere of The Single Life season 2 is any indication, the franchise is set to get racier and racier, and fans have Discovery+ to thank (or curse) for it.
