10 Upcoming Non-MCU Projects Featuring Marvel Stars | ScreenRant

Movie stars are more or less a thing of the past. The stars of modern blockbusters are intellectual properties like a YA supernatural romance or a galaxy far, far away, or, indeed, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. One of the only ways to become a bona fide movie star in today’s Hollywood is by playing a Marvel superhero.

The MCU has made superstars out of actors like Chris Pratt and Brie Larson. The stars of Marvel have plenty of exciting upcoming projects, like Robert Downey, Jr.’s supporting role in the new Christopher Nolan movie.

10 Robert Downey, Jr. - Oppenheimer (July 21, 2023)

After the shaky critical and commercial response to his spy-fi epic Tenet, Christopher Nolan is hard at work on his next ambitious cinematic opus: a big-budget biopic of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. Regular Nolan cohort Cillian Murphy will play the title role in Oppenheimer.

The movie will focus on the Manhattan Project and the creation of the atom bomb. Marvel’s former flagship star Robert Downey, Jr. has been cast to play Lewis Strauss, a businessman and naval officer who served two terms on the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.

9 Chris Evans - Lightyear (June 17, 2022)

Pixar’s next project has controversially recast the role of Buzz Lightyear. Instead of featuring the familiar voice of Tim Allen, the Buzz-centric spin-off Lightyear will star Captain America himself, Chris Evans, as the iconic Space Ranger.

Set for release in summer 2022, Lightyear is a straightforward sci-fi adventure about the “real” Buzz. This isn’t the Buzz action figure played by Allen in the Toy Story movie; it’s the Buzz that exists in the Buzz universe within the Toy Story universe.

8 Chris Hemsworth - Escape From Spiderhead (December 2021)

Set to be released on Netflix sometime in December, Escape from Spiderhead is a new sci-fi thriller from Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski and Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Starring Chris Hemsworth, Miles Teller, and Jurnee Smollett, the movie tells the story of two convicts in a dystopian near-future stuck in a facility experimenting on prisoners with mood-altering drugs.

7 Samuel L. Jackson - Argylle (TBD)

Samuel L. Jackson is reuniting with Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn for another spy thriller. Argylle, adapted by Wonder Woman’s Jason Fuchs from the novel by Ellie Conway, focuses on an amnesiac spy who’s tricked into thinking she’s a famous spy fiction writer.

Backed by Apple, Argylle is planned as the first in a trilogy. It has a slightly similar premise to The Long Kiss Goodnight, also starring Jackson. Jackson is part of an ensemble cast that also includes Henry Cavill, John Cena, Bryan Cranston, Rob Delaney, Bryce Dallas Howard, Dua Lipa, Catherine O’Hara, and Sam Rockwell.

6 Tom Holland - Uncharted (February 18, 2022)

A movie adaptation of the Uncharted games has been in development hell for years. Handled right, an Uncharted movie could play like James Bond meets Indiana Jones. But film adaptations of video games are notoriously disappointing.

After years of changing hands between different filmmakers, the Uncharted movie is finally set to hit theaters in February. Spider-Man star Tom Holland will play Nathan Drake opposite Mark Wahlberg as Sully, while Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer is directing.

5 Florence Pugh - Don’t Worry Darling (September 23, 2022)

Booksmart director Olivia Wilde and screenwriter Katie Silberman are reteaming for a very different movie than their game-changing high school comedy. Don’t Worry Darling, scheduled for release on September 23, 2022, is a psychological thriller set in the 1950s about an unhappy housewife and the dark secret kept by her husband.

Florence Pugh, whose star was on the rise long before she took over as the MCU’s new Black Widow, will appear in the film’s ensemble cast alongside Eternals’ Harry Styles and Gemma Chan.

4 Chris Pratt - Untitled Mario Movie (December 21, 2022)

Chris Pratt recently sparked a bunch of debates among fanboys as he was cast to voice not one, but two iconic roles: Mario from the Nintendo games and Garfield from the Jim Davis comic strips. The as-yet-untitled Mario movie is a computer-animated feature rumored to be a springboard into a Mario cinematic universe.

Pratt will voice Mario alongside Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad.

3 Brie Larson - Lessons In Chemistry (TBD)

TV producers snapped up the rights to Lessons in Chemistry before the source novel was even published. Captain Marvel star Brie Larson will executive-produce the series for Apple in addition to playing the lead role of Elizabeth Zott.

Set in the 1960s, the story concerns a young woman who dreams of being a scientist but faces discrimination because of her gender. Oscar-nominated Erin Brockovich writer Susannah Grant has been tapped to write the series. Jason Bateman is also on board as an executive producer.

2 Jonathan Majors - Devotion (TBD)

Jonathan Majors made his MCU debut earlier this year in the season finale of Loki on Disney+. The actor has been cast to play Kang the Conqueror, likely to be Marvel’s next Thanos-sized big bad, but he debuted as a variant of Kang who goes by “He Who Remains.”

Before his true introduction as Kang, Majors will star in Devotion for J.D. Dillard, director of Sleight and Sweetheart. Co-starring Joe Jonas and Glen Powell, the movie revolves around Navy fighter pilots in the Korean War.

1 Scarlett Johansson - Asteroid City (TBD)

After passing on her MCU torch to a new Black Widow, Scarlett Johansson will reunite with quirky auteur Wes Anderson. Johansson’s last collaboration with Anderson was a voice role in the stop-motion animated Isle of Dogs, but the director’s latest opus is a live-action effort. Asteroid City is an ensemble romantic dramedy that Anderson has been shooting in Spain.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but like many Anderson films, it’s reported to revolve around precocious children wise beyond their years. Johansson will appear alongside many of Anderson’s other frequent collaborators, like Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, and Adrien Brody. This sprawling cast includes some Anderson collaborators who are also MCU stars, like Tilda Swinton and Jeff Goldblum.
