Animal Crossing: New Horizons' first paid DLC, Happy Home Paradise, will let players customize villagers' vacation houses on a new island. Happy Home Paradise will be available for purchase individually on the Nintendo eShop, but users can also access it along with Switch Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis games via the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription. It may seem strange that Nintendo would bundle brand-new Animal Crossing DLC with old N64 games, but it's likely a move to justify the new membership's high price.
The Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack plans will cost $30 USD more than the current individual plan and $45 more than the current family plan, at $50 for an individual and $80 for a family. Many feel the Expansion Pack is too expensive, and its price announcement trailer has more than 80,000 dislikes on Nintendo's YouTube channel at the time of writing. Even with the Animal Crossing DLC, fans aren't happy with its price, so launching it without that addition would likely cause even more anger.
Although it's unknown how much the Expansion Pack would cost if it did not include Happy Home Paradise, it's possible Nintendo sees the Animal Crossing DLC as a way to justify the current price. Rather than Happy Home Paradise being bundled with retro games as an added incentive to buy the DLC, the N64 and Genesis games come with the DLC to make the Switch Online offer more palatable.
One draw of Happy Home Paradise is that it allows players to share their creations online and to download others' designs. A Switch Online membership is required for this to function, and buying the DLC on top of a standard, individual NSO membership would cost $45. Animal Crossing players might find it makes sense for them to just purchase the Expansion Pack, as it gives them access to N64 and Genesis games for only $5 more. With the DLC included, Nintendo may be able to bring in the many fans of Animal Crossing: New Horizons or of Nintendo 64 games - and fans of both - at a high price.
That said, if fans want to buy the Animal Crossing DLC without paying yearly for it, it will be available for purchase separately, but the reverse is not true; whether or not someone wants Happy Home Paradise, it's seemingly baked into the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack's price, which may mean those only interested in N64 games are being forced to pay extra for them. Other DLC and retro games, such as the rumored Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles, could be added to Switch Online in the future, but the price is currently only backed up by the Animal Crossing DLC and the existing retro games.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons' Happy Home Paradise DLC will launch on November 5, 2021.
