What Thor Needs To Overcome To Stop Being Fat Thor (& How He Can)

Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder has some obstacles to overcome if he wants to stop being “Fat Thor” ahead of his role in Thor: Love and Thunder. In a move that didn’t come without some degree of controversy, Avengers: Endgame changed the status quo for the character by turning him into “Fat Thor”. The physical transformation Thor underwent as a result of the snap lasted through the end of the movie, but may not carry over to his next one.

It’s not clear how much time will have passed between Avengers: Endgame and Thor: Love and Thunder, but it looks like Thor will indeed have enough time to get back into fighting shape. The movie’s director, Taika Waititi, has made comments that indicate that this was just a phase for the character, and set photos have reinforced the idea that Thor 4 will be moving on by having the hero regain his lost muscular physique. So all things considered, it does appear that what happened in Avengers: Endgame was never supposed to be a permanent or lasting change. Instead, it was a story for a single chapter in Thor’s life and a reaction to his failure to kill Thanos (Josh Brolin). Since it being used as a humorous surprise has a lot to do with why it worked, it makes sense that Thor 4 will change directions.

As for how Thor will get past this, it's important to understand what put him in this situation in the first place. The underlying issue facing Thor in Endgame was his confidence (or lack thereof). Not being able to stop the Mad Titan with Stormbreaker broke the character and cost him his self-worth. As a consequence of that, Thor lost his motivation, his interest in fighting, and fell into a slump. However, his participation in the reversal of the snap and the final battle with Thanos set him on the path to moving forward with his life, which is the first step to shedding his “Fat Thor” look.

Looking at what Endgame set up for Thor’s future, the God of Thunder should continue on this course. Following Thanos’ defeat, Thor joined up with the Guardians, who are confirmed to have a presence in the next movie. Presumably, he’s been sharing adventures with them since Endgame’s ending. Considering how much Guardians like Rocket seem to admire Thor (much to Star-Lord’s chagrin), he could rediscover his confidence while working with them. Easily being the most powerful person in the room and being a leader figure to the Guardians can inspire Thor to be his best self.

No long isolating himself (with Korg and Miek) to avoid his problems while seeking comfort in playing video games, eating and drinking, Thor's lifestyle changes will no doubt improve both his emotional and physical wellbeing. Traveling to different planets, taking on various jobs with the Guardians, and getting involved in fights is just the sort of activity and excitement that Thor needs to overcome his weight and confidence issues.  As the strongest hero on the team who the others have come to value, he understandably won’t want to let them down. So because of the companionship and motivation provided by his new allies, he can leave his “Fat Thor” days behind him in Thor: Love and Thunder.
