Marvel has released a new poster for What If..? featuring the fully assembled Guardians of the Multiverse team in a homage to Guardians of the Galaxy. The Marvel Cinematic Universe's newest team of unexpected heroes assembled during the final episode 9 of the Disney+ series. The team was assembled by the Watcher (Jeffrey Wright) to combat the threat of Ultron, who put the entirety of reality at stake with his wielding of the Infinity Stones.
In What If..? episode 9, The Watcher realizes that he is unable to defeat the powerful Infinity Ultron (Ross Marquand), so with the help of Doctor Strange Supreme (Benedict Cumberbatch), he assembles a team of heroes from the realities he had observed throughout the series. Uniting Star-Lord T'challa (Chadwick Boseman), Captain Carter (Hayley Atwell), Thanos-Killer Gamora (Cynthia McWilliams), Party Thor (Chris Hemsworth), King Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), and Black Widow (Lake Bell), the team fought the mechanical menace. First teased in early leaked merchandise, the team was finally united in the What If...? season 1 finale, and has now been featured in a recent piece of promotional artwork.
Posted by the official What If..? Twitter account, the artwork by Dorothea Taylor features the entirety of the multiversal team united under the eyes of The Watcher and the team's name. The artwork displays featured the full lineup of the Guardians of the Multiverse against a mechanical backdrop, with the Watcher's quote,"You Have Been Chosen," positioned below. The posing of the team is a reference to the first Guardians of the Galaxy film, which featured a scene of the team in Nova Corps custody against a line-up as John C. Reilly's Nova officer, Rhomann Dey, read out each member's profile to his superior, Garthan Saal (Peter Serafinowicz). Check out the full artwork below.
Following What If..? episode 9, many fans are wondering if the Guardians of the Multiverse will return, with a trailer for The Making of What If..? teasing connections to the MCU's future. Early plans for a spin-off series following T'challa's incarnation of Star-Lord were planned, and it has been confirmed that Thanos-Killer Gamora will have her story told in What If..? season 2, after her episode had to be cut from season 1 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Showrunners Bryan Andrews and A.C. Bradley have also teased that future episodes may potentially revisit characters, though there would be a focus primarily on new tales.
Though the MCU is no stranger to assembling teams of heroes, the Guardians of the Multiverse is unlike any other due to its multiversal nature. With the walls of the multiverse set to be further broken down in the future of the MCU, such as returning former Spider-Man villains causing chaos in Spider-Man: No Way Home, What If..?'s Guardians of the Multiverse returning is possible. With Black Widow finding a new home, T'Challa recruiting Peter Quill, and Captain Carter reuniting with a lost love, there is plenty of stories left to be told with this cast.
