The Halloween franchise is currently going through a reboot with a new trilogy, but what happened to Dr. Samuel Loomis in this current timeline? The film industry is defined by trends, and among the most popular ones in recent years are reboots. These have been especially common in the horror genre, and among the most recent reboots is that of the Halloween franchise. It all began in 1978 with John Carpenter’s Halloween, which spawned a franchise with a total of 13 movies, including two remakes and the upcoming Halloween Ends.
Halloween tells the story of Michael Myers, who on Halloween night 1963, murdered his older sister when he was just six years old. Michael was then sent to Smith’s Grove Sanitarium, where he stayed for over a decade and became Dr. Sam Loomis’ (Donald Pleasence) patient. Fifteen years later, on October 30, 1978, Michael escaped and returned to his hometown Haddonfield, Illinois, where he began to stalk Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her friends. Laurie became the only survivor of Michael’s killing spree and continued to be his target for a couple more movies. However, the Halloween franchise has gone through a couple of retcons that haven’t exactly benefitted the stories of Michael and Laurie, and it’s now getting a reboot trilogy with David Gordon Green as director.
The new Halloween movies serve as sequels to Carpenter’s original movie and ignore all sequels, meaning that Michael and Laurie are not siblings in the current timeline, Jamie Lloyd (Danielle Harris) and John Tate (Josh Hartnett) never existed, and Laurie is still alive. Given that decades have passed between Carpenter’s first movie and Gordon Green’s Halloween, Dr. Loomis is no longer around, but he hasn’t been ignored either. Loomis has been part of Halloween and Halloween Kills through tapes, courtroom sketches, and flashbacks (with Tom Jones Jr. playing the part in Halloween Kills and voiced by Colin Mahan), but exactly what happened to him between movies is unknown.
Halloween didn’t address Loomis’ fate and only mentioned that he died, leaving one of his students, Dr. Ranbir Sartain (Haluk Bilginer), in charge of Michael Myers’ case. Sartain was nothing like Loomis, and even though he became obsessed with Michael’s story, as Loomis did in the sequels of the first timeline, he was the one who made Michael’s recent escape possible. The only bits of information about Loomis post-first Halloween movie is that he advocated for Michael’s execution and immediate cremation, adding that he wanted to witness his destruction to make sure he was dead. It’s assumed, then, that Loomis simply died either of old age or some illness, but nothing related to Michael nor his case. In the previous timelines, Loomis was supposedly killed by Michael in Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (though in the original cut, the role of leader of the Cult of Thorn was passed on to him without his consent), in the Halloween H20 timeline he died at his retirement house where he was under Marion Chambers’ care, and in Rob Zombie’s movies he was killed by Michael.
Dr. Loomis, then, was given a somewhat normal ending in the current Halloween timeline as he didn’t go through any more killing sprees from Michael Myers, but he surely continued studying his case until his final days. Loomis will always be an important character in the Halloween franchise, as he was the one who determined Michael was “pure evil”, and he tried his best to keep everyone safe from him by keeping him locked up for the rest of his days.
