Shudder announces that V/H/S/94 is now the biggest movie premiere ever for the horror streaming platform in the reboot's opening weekend. The found footage anthology horror franchise first kicked off in 2012 with the eponymous film from Bloody Disgusting founder Brad Miska with shorts from writers and directors Simon Barrett, Adam Wingard, David Bruckner, Ti West, Glenn McQuaid, Joe Swanberg, and the filmmaking collective Radio Silence. Though having received generally mixed reviews, the film would be a success and spawn a well-received sequel and spin-off followed by a poorly received threequel.
After going on a hiatus for six years, it was revealed the franchise was getting a reboot in the form of V/H/S/94 which would seek to bring its shorts together for a unified narrative, a first for the series. The film would once again be produced by Bloody Disgusting Films alongside Radio Silence Productions, Cinepocalypse Productions, Studio71, Raven Banner Entertainment and Shudder Original Films for the first time in the franchise. Having hit the horror platform earlier this month, it appears the wait was well worth it for fans of the franchise.
On the heels of its premiere on the platform, Shudder has revealed that V/H/S/94 has become its biggest movie premiere. The horror reboot drew in more members watching its debut in its October 6 opening weekend than any prior film debut on Shudder, though no exact numbers have been given. Craig Engler, General Manager of Shudder, wrote the following statement:
“V/H/S had been one of the most fun and influential horror franchises of the 2010s, providing a showcase for a new generation of filmmakers like David Bruckner (The Night House), Radio Silence (Ready Or Not) and Ti West (The House of the Devil). When producers Josh Goldblum and Brad Miska told us what they had in mind for V/H/S/94, we knew we had to commission it as a Shudder Original production, and their amazing lineup of directors delivered something truly special. Our members have embraced the film with record-setting viewership numbers, and critics are calling it one of the best horror movies of the year."
In addition to becoming a streaming hit for Shudder, V/H/S/94 has also become a critical hit, currently sitting at a 93 percent "Certified Fresh" approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. This marks a positive step forward for the V/H/S franchise, with most of the prior films situated on the "Rotten" side of the scale except for the second installment, which sits at a 71 percent, and the spin-off Siren, which garnered a 65 percent. It also sets the reboot as the highest-reviewed horror film of the year, coming out ahead of both mainstream hits such as Candyman and Netflix's Fear Street trilogy as well as indie fare like Censor and Sound of Violence.
With V/H/S/94 now the biggest movie premiere for Shudder, the door certainly seems open for a potential follow-up. Producer Josh Goldbloom had previously teased that the creatives behind the film had ideas for a sequel and would be dependent on the reception to the film, marking the reboot's standing as the best-received installment in the V/H/S franchise as a strong case for a new film to get in the works. In the meantime, audiences can catch up on or revisit V/H/S/94 on Shudder now.
