Venom #1 Sneak Peek Reveals New King in Black Has Abandoned His Son

Warning: spoilers for Venom #1 ahead!

A new preview for Venom #1 shows Eddie Brock's son Dylan slowly adjusting to his new role in the Marvel Universe, while his father Eddie embraces his role as the new King in Black. Dylan was last seen in Venom #200 where the symbiote Venom saved him from a schoolyard bully, and now the new Venom is finally ready for his Marvel Comics debut. The climactic ending of the recent King in Black event throughout Marvel comics, which heavily featured Eddie and Dylan, has ushered in a new era for Venom and the entire symbiote race.

The conclusion to the world-spanning event, which saw Earth covered in darkness and many of its mightiest heroes taken over by evil symbiote goo, ended with Knull, the God of Symbiotes, dead. Knull was only able to be defeated after Eddie Brock, as Venom, tapped into the little understood Enigma Force to become the God of Light and deal a final fatal blow to the violent and sadistic God of Symbiotes. Now, Eddie is the new King in Black, and is in charge of the entire symbiote race while traveling through outer space. This leaves Dylan back on Earth, without his parents, acclimating to his new role as host to Venom.

In the preview for Venom #1, written by Al Ewing (Immortal Hulk) and Ram V. (Carnage: Black, White, and Blood), with art by Bryan Hitch (The Ultimates), Dylan's gut-wrenching transformation into the Sinister Symbiote is on full, brutal display. Dylan appears stuck in a rundown roadside motel as a whole swarm of soldiers surround the building, looking ready to attack Venom on a moment's notice. Dylan is clearly conflicted, wanting to fight as Venom, but the symbiote itself encourages him to run, telling him, "You want to stay and fight, but it won't bring him back. Eddie's gone, Dylan."

While Eddie Brock, in Venom #200, seemingly gave his blessing for his son to become Earth's new Venom, it is clear that Dylan is still struggling with being the host for the violent symbiote. Dylan's chosen form as Venom is intimidating and massive, with long metal chains wrapped around him (implied to be inspired by his love of Spawn), belying the fact that in reality he is still just a child. The preview for the exciting first chapter of Venom #1 doesn't give much background detail on what got Dylan into this motel mess, but it makes it clear that he is still feeling the emotional impact of his father leaving for space, eventually yelling, "You're not my Dad!" at Venom as the comic jumps back in time to recount Eddie's latest adventure.

With his father in space, acting as the new King in Black and controlling the billions of symbiotes throughout the stars, Dylan's debut as Venom will not come easily. Eddie passing along the mantle of Venom to Dylan was a touching and meaningful moment between father and son, but Venom #1 may illuminate if Dylan was the right choice to be the next Sinister Symbiote. Al Ewing, Ram V, and Bryan Hitch helming this new era of Venom means it can be expected that Dylan's story is going to quickly become bloody, violent, and out-of-control when the first issue hits retailers November 10.
