The Eternals Remind Fans of Their Greatest Weakness Before MCU Debut

Contains spoilers for Eternals: Celestia #1.

Being some of the oldest beings on Earth, the Eternals have seen a lot; they have watched empires rise and fall, and actually have met their gods. Fans might think very little—if anything, would scare an Eternal, but ahead of their MCU debut, Marvel has revealed the one thing they do not like: the supernatural. This secret is revealed in the first issue of Eternals: Celestia, on sale now in print and digital.

The Eternals were created by the legendary Jack Kirby, who had returned to Marvel in the mid-1970s after a stint at rival DC Comics. Using the “ancient astronaut” craze of the time, the Eternals explored the intersection of science fiction, super-heroics, and mythology; in many ways, it was an extension of Kirby’s Fourth World Saga. Gifted with fantastic powers thanks to the mysterious Celestials, the Eternals are an offshoot of humanity, who while largely living separate from humans, still managed to inspire many of Earth’s myths and legends; for instance, the Eternal Sersi was the basis for the sorcerers in Homer’s Odyssey. In addition to individual powers, each Eternal is possessed of super stamina, endurance, and the ability to be reborn.  It would seem the Eternals have little to fear, but Eternals: Celestia #1 shows they do not do well with the supernatural, and magic.

The story by Kieron Gillen, Kei Zama, Zama, John Livesay, Matthew Wilson, and Clayton Cowles, sees Ajax, the sole Eternal who can commune with the Celestials, encounter the Avengers of One Million BC. Initially, Ajax assesses the group’s most powerful members, such as Odin, the Phoenix, and the Star Brand. Then, she turns her attention to the others, and when she gets to Agamotto, Earth’s first Sorcerer Supreme, she mentions that magic is the Eternals’ “weak spot.” She is also amazed at how powerful Agamotto is, given his tiny body. Ajax then analyzes Ghost Rider, and it gives her pause when she realizes he is a demon from Hell, commenting that “deals with demonics never turn out well.”

Ajax never elaborated on why magic is the Eternals’ weakest spot. Given their powers, advanced technology, and direct connection to the Celestials, magic should not present too much of a problem. The Eternals have put a lot of their faith not only in the Celestials but in their own technology as well. The Eternals value order in a society, something that the book’s most recent run has made clear, depicting the Eternals as nothing more than cogs in a cosmic machine. Magic, on the other hand, can be unpredictable, throwing chaos into the well-ordered Eternal society. Demons fall a similar pattern, and it is worth noting that Ajax did not feel uncomfortable around Agamotto—she was actually impressed by him, but Ghost Rider truly made her skin crawl.

Magicians and demons represent everything the Eternals stand against. It is no small feat to scare an Eternal, but supernatural-based characters, like Ghost Rider, do just that.
