Ted Lasso Season 3 News & Updates: Everything We Know

Ted Lasso season 3 has been confirmed by the show’s creators and Apple TV, so here’s everything we know about the final season. Based on a skit for NBC Sports in 2013, Ted Lasso took fans by surprise as it became one of the most popular and critically acclaimed comedy series on television. The show follows Ted Lasso, an American football coach who is hired to coach the football from across the pond, soccer, for the fictional English Premier League team AFC Richmond. It’s revealed that Ted was hired (and betrayed) by club-owner Rebecca as a ploy to spite her ex-husband and see the team fail, all the while Ted’s contagious optimism, kindness, and lessons of accountability work to win over the skeptical players, staff, and fans.

Starring former Saturday Night Live cast-member Jason Sudeikis in the lead role, Ted Lasso is a surprisingly fresh and feel-good sports series that has become a worldwide phenomenon. The series has been celebrated for its honest tributes to football culture, its hopeful premise with its flawed and lovable characters, and its compelling ability to balance dramatic character depth with comforting humor. While Apple TV+ doesn’t release typical viewership data, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that viewership for the backlash-prone Ted Lasso season 2 has still phenomenally increased six-fold from the show’s season 1 numbers. Ted Lasso is clearly resonating with audiences, and season 3 can be expected to increase in viewership.

Truly revealing how beloved Ted Lasso has become, the series received 20 nominations for the 2021 Emmys and took home seven, including Oustanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Sudeikis and Outstanding Comedy Series for the whole crew. The anticipation for Ted Lasso season 3 is only growing, and here’s everything we know so far.

After two seasons as a compelling, critically acclaimed comedy series, Ted Lasso as viewers know it is finally coming to an end. Most successful comedies enjoy longevity in seasons compared to dramas - especially the likes of Friends or HBO's 11-season Curb Your Enthusiasm - so a three-season arc for Ted Lasso seems somewhat oddly short. This can be countered by how much the drama really plays into Ted Lasso’s character development and growth compared to its comedic elements, but still, for a highly acclaimed series, three seasons is strange. In reality, three seasons was the plan all along for Ted Lasso. The series was originally pitched by star Jason Sudeikis and showrunner Bill Lawrence as a three-season arc, with the writers and creators mapping out the characters’ beginning, middle, and end stages based on three seasons (via THR). Lawrence revealed that the story of Ted Lasso and AFC Richmond being told now will be over in Ted Lasso season 3, whether they find a new story to tell with the character or not. The possibility of Ted Lasso coming back for season 4 may rely on whether Jason Sudeikis, who is now being paid $1 million per episode, is eager to return. Either way, the Ted Lasso story told in seasons 1 and 2 will be coming to a close next year.

Back in late September, 2021, Apple TV confirmed that Ted Lasso season 3 will have 12 episodes, which is the same length as the rollercoaster ride of Ted Lasso season 2. The Apple TV+ sports comedy’s debut season only had 10 episodes, with nearly every installment being approximately 30 minutes. As the series has progressed, the episode’s lengths have extended to some being between 45-60 minutes, which will likely continue with all that needs to be unpacked and resolved in Ted Lasso season 3. The creators planned on Ted Lasso season 2 only being 10 episodes like season 1, but Apple TV smacked them with an additional 2-episode order, which explains why they had more time for the bottle episodes of Coach Beard’s divisive After Hours homage and the August-aired Ted Lasso Christmas episode. The additional episodes received mixed reviews from viewers due to how contained they were and that they hardly developed the larger character dynamics or drama, but many praised their focus on specific characters and seeing their lives outside of Ted Lasso's AFC Richmond pitch and locker room.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the writing room officially began working on Ted Lasso season 3 on September 13 and the cast and crew are scheduled to begin filming in January 2022. The same article revealed that Ted Lasso is expected to premiere in summer 2022, maintaining the summer release schedule of seasons 1 and 2, though it hasn’t been confirmed by Apple. The writers intended to begin work in August, so the month-long delay may impact the anticipated summer 2022 release date. Apple TV confirmed via Twitter that filming for Ted Lasso season 2 began in January 2021 and later wrapped on June 4, 2021 (via Brendan Hunt on Twitter). Since season 2 premiered on July 23, 2021, it can be expected that Ted Lasso season 3 will wrap production in June or July 2022 and premiere 6-10 weeks later.

After sealing a $1 million-per-episode salary for season 3, Emmy-winning lead actor Jason Sudeikis is confirmed to return for Ted Lasso’s last season. Emmy winners Hannah Waddingham (Rebecca) and Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent) as well as Juno Temple (Keeley) have also closed pay increases for season 3, so don’t fret that Keeley leaving AFC Richmonds means she won’t be in the show as prominently (via THR). It’s also confirmed that writer/actor Brendan Hunt (Coach Beard) will be returning, hopefully, to actually reveal his name. Ahead of the Ted Lasso season 2 finale set up Nate’s villain arc by leaking Ted’s panic attacks and joining Rupert’s West Ham United as a coach, actor Nick Mohammed confirmed via Collider that Nate (and obviously himself) will be back to hammer out the conflict in season 3.

Showrunner Bill Lawrence also told Deadline that both Dr. Sharon (Sarah Niles) and ex-Independent Trent Crimm (James Lance) will have significant roles in Ted Lasso season 3. Aside from the main cast and characters from Ted Lasso season 2, the supporting AFC Richmond players and staff are unconfirmed, but it can be expected that Phil Dunster’s Jamie Tartt, Toheeb Jimoh’s Sam Obisanya, Cristo Fernández’s Dani Rojas, and Anthony Head’s Rupert Mannion will return.

Ted Lasso’s football legitimacy is growing, with the fictional AFC Richmond’s real-life English Premier League system striking a licensing deal with the Apple TV+ series. The deal allows Ted Lasso to use the Premier League’s assets in the series, which includes logos, trophies, and archival footage. In USD, the deal is worth approximately $680,000, which is a steep price but aptly increases the realism of Ted Lasso and its dedication to uplifting football. By striking the deal, Ted Lasso will also have the opportunity to really connect with Premier League players and teams aside from referencing them as opponents like Chelsea FC or as rival teams like Jamie Tartt’s brief career with Manchester City. The deal with Ted Lasso season 3 and the Premier League coincides with the season 2 finale, which saw AFC Richmond finally promoted back to the league after a season-long relegation.
